Hobby Lobby & the Left’s Appeasement of the Abortion god

When it comes to the so-called “contraceptive mandate” provision of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama Administration and the pro-abortion left will stop at nothing in their efforts to appease the abortion god. As anti-Christian as many of President Obama’s policies are, the current administration exhibits a religious fervor akin to the Crusades when it comes to advancing abortion-on-demand in this country. Hence, their dogged fight all the way to the United States Supreme Court in a herculean effort to force privately-held companies like Hobby Lobby to pay for abortion-on-demand and the morning-after pill.

President Obama’s support of abortion, including late-term abortions, makes former President Bill Clinton look like the good Southern Baptist he once was. Whereas Clinton (unlike his virulently pro-abortion wife, Hillary, who believes that human progress is impossible without abortion-on-demand) once famously stated that “abortion should not only be safe and legal, it should be rare” (a nice sentiment even if it was not the reality with President Clinton), the current administration prostrates itself on the altar of abortion. And, in the process, President Obama and his legal team in the Solicitor General’s Office have no qualms about dismantling the religious liberty rights of Americans. Of course, that the First Amendment religious liberty rights at stake in the Hobby Lobby case happen to involve Christians (as opposed to Muslims) makes it all the easier for the Obama Administration and its leftist allies to trample upon. I doubt we will see this President try to curtail the religious liberty rights of Muslims in this country anytime soon.

I have no delusions (at least when it comes to this issue) that all of my readers will agree with my analysis. I fully expect that some (you know who you are) will come out swinging because I have dared to peg the President as pro-abortion and anti-religious liberty. Swing away. Facts are facts. And, as Ronald Reagan once said, facts are indeed stubborn things. The fact of the matter is that this case would never have been contested to the Supreme Court but for the Administration’s insistence that companies pay for abortion-on-demand via health insurance now required through the Affordable Care Act. Prior to the ACA, employers were not required to provide insurance and were certainly not mandated to cover employees’ elective abortions or other contraception.

Following the passage of Obamacare, no one would have cared if a company had refused to pay for insurance for blood transfusions or vaccinations (as the female Supreme Court Justices tried to argue). Not only was the analogy ludicrous, but to equate the government’s demand for privately held companies to financially underwrite abortion with paying premiums that allow for blood-transfusions or vaccinations is disingenuous and dangerous. If Justices Sotomayor and Kagan (both Obama appointees) believe that there is no difference (religious or otherwise) between refusing to pay for abortions or refusing to pay for blood transfusions/vaccinations, then I do not hold out much hope for the Republic.

For all the bluster about health care, the Hobby Lobby Case (and the companion case involving the Mennonite owned Conestoga Wood Specialties) comes down to one key issue for President Obama and leftists in this country — abortion-on-demand. Abortion, with no (real) restrictions, has become, since the 1980s, the god of the left and, sadly, the god of much of the modern Democratic Party in this country. And, as this god has only gotten stronger, it would make sense that the One, True God — the Triune God known as the Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit — would be denigrated, ridiculed, and mocked, even by politicians who claim to believe in this God.

As a nation, we continue to appease false gods while ignoring the patience, love, and grace of the Creator of the Universe. For Christians and other religious Americans, the stakes are much bigger than health care and abortion. If the Supreme Court concludes that the contraceptive mandate applies to privately held companies, then there will indeed be a slippery slope. Why stop at for-profit companies? Why not then mandate that private, non-profit charities and religious organizations (such as the Little Sisters of the Poor) provide health insurance which covers elective abortion and the morning-after pill? And, once non-profit charities and religious organizations come under the mandates of Obamacare, why not finally move on to require churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious groups to comply with the contraceptive mandate?

Some might say that churches would never be forced to cover abortion in their health insurance. After all, President Obama has provided an exemption for such groups. Well, the slippery slope always starts somewhere. In this case, it starts with Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties. The next stop along the slippery slope with be the Little Sisters of the Poor. The final stop will be Bethel Baptist Church and other churches and clearly religious groups. Why can I be so sure? Because in President Obama’s or Hillary Clinton’s or the left’s (including most of the Democratic Party) America, appeasing the god of abortion will always trump First Amendment religious liberty rights. If you don’t believe me, just wait and see!
