-Good Friday: “It’s Friday, But Sunday’s Coming”

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Here it is again. My favorite message of all time for Good Friday is by Dr. Tony Campolo. It has become a tradition on this blog to post it every year on this day.

Here is a link to the famous tape and where it can be downloaded.

The whole tape is great but the best part is at the end when Tony Campolo recalls one Sunday when he had a little preaching competition with the head pastor at the church where he attends.

Dr. Campolo tells how he preached the perfect sermon in every way and had taken the congregation to ‘the heights of glory’. As he sat down beside his pastor, Dr. Tony patted him on the knee and simply said, “Top that.” The older black pastor looked at him and said, “Boy, watch the master.” Then Dr. Campolo recalls for us the very brilliant message which followed.

The following is a short printed version of the 45 minute sermon–the printed version doesn’t really do justice to the original, but you can at least get an idea what the last part is like:

It’s Friday. But Sunday’s coming—

It was a simple sermon, starting softly, building in volume and intensity until the entire congregation was completely involved, repeating the phrases in unison. The sermon went something like this.

It’s Friday. Jesus is arrested in the garden where He was praying. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. The disciples are hiding and Peter’s denying that he knows the Lord. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. Jesus is standing before the high priest of Israel, silent as a lamb before the slaughter. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. Jesus is beaten, mocked, and spit upon. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. Those Roman soldiers are flogging our Lord with a leather scourge that has bits of bones and glass and metal, tearing at his flesh. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. The Son of man stands firm as they press the crown of thorns down into his brow. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. See Him walking to Calvary, the blood dripping from His body. See the cross crashing down on His back as He stumbles beneath the load. It’s Friday; but Sunday’s a coming.

It’s Friday. See those Roman soldiers driving the nails into the feet and hands of my Lord. Hear my Jesus cry, “Father, forgive them.” It’s Friday; but Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. Jesus is hanging on the cross, bloody and dying. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. The sky grows dark, the earth begins to tremble, and He who knew no sin became sin for us. Holy God who will not abide with sin pours out His wrath on that perfect sacrificial lamb who cries out, “My God, My God. Why hast thou forsaken me?” What a horrible cry. But Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. And at the moment of Jesus’ death, the veil of the Temple that separates sinful man from Holy God was torn from the top to the bottom because Sunday’s coming.

It’s Friday. Jesus is hanging on the cross, heaven is weeping and hell is partying. But that’s because it’s Friday, and they don’t know it, but Sunday’s a coming.

And on that horrible day 2000 years ago, Jesus the Christ, the Lord of glory, the only begotten Son of God, the only perfect man died on the cross of Calvary. Satan thought that he had won the victory. Surely he had destroyed the Son of God. Finally he had disproved the prophecy God had uttered in the Garden and the one who was to crush his head had been destroyed. But that was Friday.

Now it’s Sunday. And just about dawn on that first day of the week, there was a great earthquake. But that wasn’t the only thing that was shaking because now it’s Sunday. And the angel of the Lord is coming down out of heaven and rolling the stone away from the door of the tomb. Yes, it’s Sunday, and the angel of the Lord is sitting on that stone and the guards posted at the tomb to keep the body from disappearing were shaking in their boots because it’s Sunday, and the lamb that was silent before the slaughter is now the resurrected lion from the tribe of Judah, for He is not here, the angel says. He is risen indeed.

It’s Sunday, and the crucified and resurrected Christ has defeated death, hell, sin and the grave. It’s Sunday. And now everything has changed. It’s the age of grace, God’s grace poured out on all who would look to that crucified lamb of Calvary. Grace freely given to all who would believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary was buried and rose again. All because it’s Sunday.

At the end of the message the pastor shouts out:

It’s Friiidaaaay!

And the whole congregation responds:

But Sunday’s Coming!

In 31 AD Friday was the day of The Resurrection, that’s why they called it Good Friday.

Yashua Messiah was crucified on Tuesday and was laid in the tomb before sunset when the the first Sabbath of Unleavened Bread commenced. He was in the tomb for three days and three nights.

Here is how it went down some 2,000 years ago:

At noon, Jesus was on the cross and darkness came over the land for three hours. This was no eclipse. At midday, God supernaturally suspended the light from the sun upon the earth. This was a byproduct of what was going on in the spiritual world. Jesus was the Passover Lamb, a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. And in an act that involved more than we can imagine, the Lamb of God bore the brunt of God’s punishment for the sins of all mankind (thank you Jesus!), causing a thick darkness to envelop the earth. Then in an epic moment for mankind, at 3:00 on Friday, Jesus said “It is finished!” and gave up His spirit saying “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” and then died. At that moment, the curtain in the Temple split in two from top to bottom, symbolizing that Jesus, in the New Covenant, has opened up the way into the Most Holy of Holies for all mankind. There was also an earthquake and the tombs of many people broke open and they were raised to life.

So on Friday (see Mark 15:42), the King of Kings and Lord of Lords was crucified, died, and was buried in a tomb.

On day 2, Saturday, Jesus physical body lie dead in the tomb. But in the spiritual universe, He was down in the pits of hell in the bowels of the earth preaching to the imprisoned spirits.

And then, in a dramatic turn of the most momentous kind, in the most glorious event for the Adamic race, on the morning of the 3rd day, which was the 1st day of the week (see Luke 24:1), Sunday, the boulder in front of the tomb was rolled away by angels and in a burst of resurrection power, Jesus arose from the dead! Hallelujah! And He left behind something that modern science cannot replicate nor explain, the Shroud of Turin (https://www.shroud.com/) along with the forensically matched Sudarium of Oviedo (https://www.shroud.com/guscin.htm).

The GOOD NEWS ladies and gentlemen is this: You too can share in His resurrection! You too can rule and reign with Jesus for all time to come! Hallelujah! I can’t wait! To see how, read my profile.

Still calling Yashua Messiah a liar are you am123.

As Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights so was Yashua Messiah in the tomb. You Judaising enemies of Yashua Messiah never give up.

You will never share anything unless you repent of your evil blasphemies.

If Jesus was crucified on Tuesday as you claim, He would have had to rise from death on Thursday, for the Biblical pattern of the third day in modern terminology is the day after tomorrow. Your scenario does not fit with what Jesus said at all. Jesus told the disciples that He would be raised on the “third day”:

“From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.”
          —Matthew 16:21

“For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.”
          —Mark 9:31

“Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.”
          —Luke 9:22

So then, according to the Word, what is the meaning of the “third day”? The Biblical pattern of the “third day” means in modern terminology the day after tomorrow:

10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,
11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

          —Exodus 19:10-11

In the sequence described above, the LORD tells Moses to sanctify the people today and tomorrow and then on the third day, He would appear to them. This is not a 72 hour period. The LORD counted today as day 1, tomorrow as day 2, and the following day as day 3. In other words, the third day is the day after tomorrow. Here is another example from Scripture:

5 And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the Lord, ye shall offer it at your own will.
6 It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire.

          —Leviticus 19:5-6

And here is Jesus using the same terminology, where the third day means the day after tomorrow:

“And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.”
          —Luke 13:32

So given that the “third day” means, in modern terminology, the day after tomorrow, that fits the Friday to Sunday sequence but does not fit your sequence.

Good Friday. Huh. Strange to think that Jesus’ death was good for Him. His sacrifice was good for us, but not Him. Christendom, not Christianity, teaches nothing but falsehoods, lies, and misleading baloney. It’s a trap and a snare, all designed to lead one away from God, and to Satan. Not always overtly, but the effect is the same. Death at Armageddon. No resurrection. No eternal life on a paradise Earth.
