CANADA ‘WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED’ SAYS PM HARPER

Canada’s Prime Minister says the country will not be intimidated after a terrorist attack near parliament in Ottawa.

A gunman killed a Canadian soldier at a nearby war memorial before being shot dead inside parliament.

The gunman has been identified as a Muslim convert in his early 30s – who had recently had his passport taken away because of suspected jihadist sympathies.

NATO intercepts Russian plane in Estonian airspace

NATO says it’s intercepted a Russian spy plane flying over the Baltic Sea.

According to the western military alliance the plane entered Estonia’s airspace, prompting a summoning of the Russian ambassador, though Moscow is denying the incident.

Man to face charges after jumping White House fence

A 23-year-old man is set to face charges after jumping over the fence outside the White House.

He was quickly subdued by the U.S. Secret Service and sent to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

AP-GFK POLL: MANY DOUBT HOSPITALS CAN HANDLE EBOLA

Most Americans have some confidence that the U.S. health care system will prevent Ebola from spreading in this country, but they’re not so sure their local hospital can safely handle a patient, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll.

Amid worry here, most Americans say the U.S. also should be doing more to stop Ebola in West Africa. Health authorities have been clear: Until that epidemic ends, travelers could unknowingly carry the virus anywhere.

U.S., allies stage 15 air strikes on Islamic State in Iraq, Syria: U.S.

U.S. military forces again focused air strikes on the area near the Syrian city of Kobani in their campaign to turn back Islamic State forces and also hit oil facilities held by the IS.

A total of 15 strikes were staged Wednesday and Thursday.

Sears to close stores, lay off about 5,500 employees:

Struggling retailer Sears Holdings Corp will lay off at least 5,457 employees and close over 100 stores, many before Christmas, according to a Seeking Alpha report citing liquidation notices and employees.

At least 46 Kmart stores, 30 Sears department stores and 31 Sears Auto Centers are scheduled to close before the end of January, said the report.
