Iran: Persecution of Christians as bad as ever, despite President’s promises
Persecution of Christians in Iran is as bad as it was three years ago, in spite of the pre-election promises of the president, according to a new report.
Christians continue to be arbitrarily arrested and interrogated because of their faith. Some face “severe physical and psychological torture” during detention, and simple prayer or Bible study meetings are regarded as political activities that threaten the national security of Iran, the report says.
Churches can be closed down if they use the national language, Farsi, and Christians are regularly given long prison sentences and beatings. The worst punishments are reserved for those who convert to Christianity from Islam, when they are caught gathering in their informal house churches, and for their pastors.
Two all-party parliamentary groups, Christians in Parliament and International Freedom of Religion or Belief, joined forces to investigate the persecution of Christians in Iran.
The report details the case of one man sentenced to death simply for questioning some of the tenets of Islam on social media. Sadeq Saba, editor of BBC Persian, told the inquiry: “I hear from some people that the reason the regime is taking such a tough line against people like him is because a lot of people are becoming disappointed with Islam as a religion because of what the regime is doing.
Three Iranian Christians have been charged with ‘Mofsed-e-filarz’, or ‘spreading corruption on earth’, which carries the death sentence.
Pastor Matthias Haghnejad, Pastor Behmnam Irani and Silas Rabbani have all been charged in recent weeks, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reports. All three men are well known and respected leaders within the Church of Iran.
Pastor Haghnejad was originally charged with ‘Moharebeh’, meaning ‘enmity against God’ following his arrest on July 5, but has now charged with the more serious crime.
While both crimes carry the death sentence ‘Mofsed-e-filarz’ is thought to be the more dangerous charge, resulting in more executions.
Jailed pastor shaken by execution of inmates in Iran jail
The family of Saeed Abedini, an American pastor jailed in an Iranian prison, has expressed alarm over the state of his physical and emotional condition after he witnessed brutal events in prison.
“Saeed was quite shaken as he had to witness 6 fellow prisoners being beaten and taken to be executed (hanged) that day. It was a hard and dark day having witnessed that and seeing life being taken. The prison visit was also very hard as the families of those who were executed were crying and wailing,” his wife Naghmehrecounted her last visit with her husband, who has been in jail for nearly two and a half years.
Naghmeh has been appealing for government support in the case of her husband, as his physical and emotional condition deteriorates with the abuse he continues to witness in the Iranian prison. Naghmeh said that her husband is also suffering from internal injuries due to prison beatings.

An Iranian judge sentenced a Christian man to have his lips burnt with a cigarette for eating during the day in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A spokesperson from The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a political coalition which opposes the government, denounced the treatment as ‘savage’ and called on western countries to take action.
