Homily Notes: Thirty-Third Sunday Year B

A great theme for Hollywood is the disaster movie. The possibility of the world ending is explored in countless movies. For example, an out of control huge meteor heading towards the earth, seems to excite the imagination! Speculation about the end of the world manifests itself in many guises, from the placard with the words emblazoned “The end of the world is nigh!” to the mass destruction of the planet, an event outside of our control, all edge of the seat stuff! We do not know the hour or day, but we do know the world as we live in it, will come to an end, or at least our participation in it will.

Jesus tells us in the gospel today that his words will never pass away. These are the words that we value, for Jesus promises us of that no matter what, he is with us and will continue to be with us. Rain or shine, in sickness or in health, when coping with the ordinary and the everyday, or looking at events beyond our control, the Lord remains with us.

Life on earth is finite, it is the reality of our human condition. Each of us is faced with a choice to make, on how best to use the life we have, while it lasts. We can see life as a gift. We can see meaning and purpose in life through faith and God.

We are not puppets on a string, we are free to choose. Our life’s journey does not spring from a pre-destined plan, the only plan God has for us is that he loves us and offers that love. If we choose to, we can reject that love or choose to embrace it. Bad things happen, this is the reality of life, there is no explanation that can adequately satisfy all the opinions of the world. But in the midst of life, good or bad, God is with us, abiding forever, his presence in the Church, through the Sacraments, present in us as the Body of Christ.

The good news of the gospel is that the world will end, but that life continues, and our future in God’s hands is far brighter than we can ever imagine!
