Bible Story of the Day

The entire Bible is a revelation about Jesus Christ. From beginning to end, Jesus can be found in the text within. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. My desire through this Bible story of the day project is to show you the reference to Jesus in the Old Testament, and how the story can impact your life. My references will be posted at the bottom along with links that can help you dive deeper into the story than what I have done here. Open your heart and mind and be willing to accept scripture for what it says. If you don’t understand a story or verse or how it applies to your life, then pray to God for clarity and understanding. I pray this helps and affects your life and you have a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Water in the Rock

Exodus 17:3-6

But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. (NASB).

Where is Jesus and What Does This Mean to Us?

Through this series we have discussed prophecies of the coming of Jesus, and we discussed how God used certain men and women to represent the coming Christ, Jesus. This story is a complete change of pace. This story comes from the time of the Israelites wandering the desert. They have escaped the Egyptians and now the reality of their situation has set in. They are in a desert with no supplies, particularly water. The nation is thirsty. They are complaining to Moses that he led them out into the wilderness to die. Moses prays to God on behalf of the nation to provide them with water and God does. Moses is to strike the rock at Horeb, and water will come forth and the people will be able to drink from it.

The rock that Moses strikes represents Jesus. Here is scripture to prove Jesus is the rock: Acts 4:11 “He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone.” Moses striking the rock represented Jesus being crucified. Finally, Jesus gives us living water. His water is eternal. The nation of Israel was lost, without hope, and thirsty. Jesus quenches our thirst. These 2 verses spell this aspect out very well:

1 Corinthians 10:4, “and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ” (NASB).

John 4:14, “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (NASB).

What does this mean to us? The concept may be difficult to wrap your mind around at first. It is abstract. Jesus is the rock in our lives. He is the only solid, firm foundation by which we can live. Whether times are good or bad at this moment, if you do not have your foundation built upon Jesus then everything you have is as frail as a butterfly. At any moment you can lose it all. On the other hand, Jesus is the one thing no one can take from you. You have your faith even if you do not have a home, job, or food. The faith in Jesus can open the opportunity to provide for those things. Jesus is the water that gives us life. We constantly thirst for something, whether it is money, a better job, a spouse, popularity, or any other desire. Jesus quenches that thirst. He offers us eternal water that satisfies us. Our desires shift as we focus on Jesus. What you once considered to be substandard becomes a blessing, because you realize everything we have is from Jesus. Build your foundation on the only stable foundation in this world Jesus. Let Jesus satisfy your desires and provide for you more than anything this world can offer.
