Thirteenth Station - Jesus is taken down from the Cross and given to his Mother

We adore you O Christ and we praise you

Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

From the Gospel according to Matthew 27:54-55:
When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” There were also many women there, looking on from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.

Blood, and water, flowed from Jesus’ side. The water of Baptism, and the Blood of the Eucharist. The sacraments are the very body of Christ, poured out for the life of the world.

The Cross looks so alone with Jesus’ lifeless body hanging in death. Yet the figures of Mary and John and a few disciples remain close by, so close that they take Jesus’ body down, the beautiful imagery of the body of Jesus, placed into the loving, protecting arms of his beloved mother, is powerful. The church is born as Jesus is placed into his mother’s arms.

People say they don’t need to come to church to discover God, they can do this at home, or in a garden or some other place, yet the church is the expression where we receive the body of Jesus into our arms, and like Mary are to carry him tenderly from then on. The church is the place where we break bread, remember the Lord, and make him present, the church is the worship of thanksgiving to God, for all time, for the death of Jesus.

Jesus, by your death on the cross, grant me the courage to see that as a living member of the church, I carry your body with me.

I love you Jesus my love above all things…
