Ancient Eyes.

A tale of nativity

Knelt at the nativity,

hushed for a moment,

stillness, not just the absence of activity.

Ancient eyes fill with tears.

Returning lights of the dawn’s reappearing, dispels useless fears!

A Father, loving the world so much.

Blesses through this fragile infant’s arrival, introduces sanctity’s gentle touch.

A sleeping only Son,

a maiden, flanked by a guardian,

angels prayer rising as incense,

shepherds heralding the good news,

peering silently at the Magi,

who make a regal entrance,

leaving a legacy of an eternal impression, presenting

gifts of kingly gold, myrrh, death’s anointing balm,

and the priestly breath of frankincense.

Love, pure, full of grace, of truth, descended,

every breath taken in trust, in hope of heaven, now makes perfect sense.

Heaven cannot contain its admiration directed towards this one beloved Son.

Ancient eyes gaze at the mystery, the humility, the sheer poverty of the Christmas nativity.

This poem is inspired by the fact that nativity is contemplated through each person’s eyes, “the windows to the soul” and here in the heart, the mystery takes root. The mystery of God loving the world so much that he sent his only Son!
