New Year

Loud explosions

fizzed across the night sky.

The year has ended, as time marches on, flies by

I felt as I awoke

that I have never been so old before.

The windows were opened wide

to let out the old year or welcome the new,

I don’t clearly recall that childhood ritual anymore.

A Hail Mary was quietly said.

In respect from the living, offered towards the dead,

The breakfast toast consumed,

washed down with a mug of coffee

that had gurgled seconds previously in the fancy machine

Christmas continues “Glory in the highest heavens!”

onwards the breath of hoping, to confront the new year,

childhood rituals advancing to maturity, recalled memory

moving forwards, headlong, to those things as yet unseen!
