Remembrance: A light in the darkness

Holocaust Remembrance Day 2022

A day for quiet reflection

for asking an eternal question…

Why Lord, why allow such depraved devastation?

A silence reaches into the depths of remembrance

expressed in tears that soak wrinkled faces,

with relatives admiring their bravery, their valour.

Age ravishes the frames

of those whose bodies survived the holocaust horror.

Though preserved eternally, there are sacred words recorded

those painfilled voices of those who lived through it.

Uttering the unthinkable, unimaginable depths of evil inflicted.

So many sacrifices spoken of, the stories of selfless giving

Trembling, the voices of the reluctant messengers cried

Imploring us not to forget, those haunted by their still living

Who embrace the guilt of being alive, as too many loved ones died

Survivors, beacons of hope for the future

lights in the darkness of our blighted human past

remaining grateful for humanity at its best, a flicker of the touch of liberation.
