Advent: Waiting

We are a people who are waiting…

From the very first light of dawn

as a day flickers into new life, we wait

Winter clouds drift

across icy morning November skies,

cold the wind that blows

Fastening a protective coat

around a shaking frame,

facing the bleak time of waiting

Onwards, towards the late afternoon

that sweeps across with sunshine briefly re-appearing

Yet it is freezing,

pink, rosy cheeks adorn my face

on this joyful Gaudete Sunday

Early evening frosting descends

from freshly darkened skies, covered with the blanket of night

And into evening I am still waiting,

I am not fearing, no dread has seized me, I am contently waiting

Closing my eyes to the smothering of sleep,

I wait until I will awake to greet the Christ

when at last he arrives in splendour, in glory,

with a beautiful telling upon his lips,

words of a miraculous story,

a moment of realisation for my humanity, waiting so patiently, for eternity.
