St. Simon

Feast date: Feb 18

A relative of Jesus’, possibly a first cousin. He is in the Gospel of Matthew, and is one of the brethren of Christ mentioned in Acts who was present at the birth of the Church on the first Pentecost.

Reported to have been at the martyrdom of Saint James the Lesser, he was chosen to succeed James as bishop of Jerusalem. In 66, before the city fell to the Romans, the Christians received a divine warning, and evacuated to nearby Pella, with Simon as their leader.

In the aftermath of the destruction of Jerusalem, Simon led the Christians back to the city where they flourished, performed miracles, and converted many.

Simon was eventually arrested, tortured and martyred for the twin crimes of being Jewish and Christian.

His death was that of crucifixion.

    • Daughter of the Church

For once, I thank CNA to have respected the calendar of the saints. St. Simon, bishop & martyr shares this date with Saint Marie-Bernadette Soubirous. I take the liberty to add some important details about this saint of the day of February 18. Those said details are no trivial matters, but on the contrary may re-ignite the faith which has gone dangerously cold in our century.
I base my lines upon the revelations by the Italian mystic Maria Valtorta. This mystic who is buried in the basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence has, on her behalf, been started a recollection of witnessing’s in order to demonstrate her heroic Christian virtues, first steps towards a procedure of beatification. The formidable work of Valtorta was incidentally read by Antipope “Saint” John-Paul II as well as by the controversial “Saint” Teresa of Calcutta, besides having been read by the late Pope Pius XII who said -in front of three priests: “Let the people read it (the works), they will understand” which, short of a pontifical imprimatur, was a genuine verbal endorsement.

St. Simon was the son of Alpheus and Mary of Alpheus. Alpheus was the elder brother of St. Joseph the Just, spouse of the BVM. Alpheus had named his first boy Joseph, probably after his just brother. St. Joseph was therefore the uncle of Joseph, Simon, James (the lesser) and Jude, both latest been future apostles. That is for the family ties. Both elder nephews Joseph & Simon got their education through the…

        - – - continuation – - -

… Both elder nephews Joseph & Simon got their education through the rabbi of Nazareth, but Holy Mary refused this same education for Her son Jesus. The Blessed Virgin Mary, let’s not forget, had been a Temple Virgin under the direction of Anna of Phanuel and therefore was a genuine savant in the scriptures which She understood at perfection. Holy Mary home-schooled Jesus and the two cousins James & Jude on Her house (which has been transported to Loreto by angels).
Later during Our Lord’s ministry, James was pre-designated as becoming the future first bishop of Jerusalem. It was a divine reason, as explained by Jesus to the mystic, because the Jerusalemites Jews would accept better a “brother” to continue His Church. After the martyrdom of James the lesser, Simon became logically the successor as second bishop of Jerusalem. It is said that he was crucified at the old age of 120.

Those details are not trivial, because it shows the foresightedness of God in the continuation of the Primitive Church long after the destruction of Jerusalem of year 70 ad. The fact that St. Simon had not been directly educated by Holy Mary, but but a common rabbi, explains his initial reticence at following the Lord, as well as his elder brother Joseph, however it shows that since they converted some times after the Passion, it shows the largess of God at accepting anyone who believe in Him, even if it was “later”. The feast of St. Simon, bishop, martyr is important for everyone, Jews & Gentiles included who convert in later days.

        END.
