US Embassy had concerns about Quebec UFO Cult, according to a leaked memo made available via Wikileaks. The cable, dated January 3, 2003 and made available April 28 of this year, expresses a concern over of the Raelian cult; specifically their claims of human cloning.
Just a quick flashback: “Raelian leader says cloning first step to immortality.” –CNN, Dec 27, 2002
The embassy cable is titled “cloning claim puts spotlight on Quebec-based Raelian group.” It can be viewed via the Wikileaks Cable Viewer HERE. I pasted a copy of the cable in its entirety below.
Interestingly, the cable appears to suggest that there was genuine worry within the U.S. that the cult’s claims could result in public demand for very strict anti-human-cloning legislation in Canada.
The cable specifically addresses “the Montreal-based Raelian group, whose member Dr. Brigitte Boisselier announced at a December 27 press conference in Hollywood, Florida the birth of the first cloned human being, a 7 pound baby girl nicknamed Eve.” It then goes on to state: “One likely result of the Boisselier announcement is that Canada’s pending legislation to ban human cloning could contain stricter restrictions.”
So it seems that people within the U.S. government would like to keep the door open to creation of human clones, and the wild claims being made by the Raelians were seen as something that could jeopardize this. And Washington DC is concerned about what laws Canada passes, including (or especially) laws governing the creation of human clones?
Here’s a thought: U.S. politicians can pass whatever laws they want to ban human cloning in the United States, to appease U.S. voters … all the while knowing that there is greater leniency in Canada. But again, why? Why should the U.S. government care, let alone be involved, in human cloning in Canada?
