More Le Roy students struck with ‘mystery illness,’ parents demand more tests

Parents of sick Le Roy children had a meeting over the weekend, to openly discuss whether or not they accept the conversion disorder diagnosis. A gathering of several parents met in Stafford, Genesee County, Sunday afternoon.

A part of the reason for the meeting is because at least another 2 children have begun exhibiting similar symptoms; and it’s possible that as many as 16 children have contracted this ‘mystery illness.’

Since last September, children have been afflicted by uncontrollable tics. Until now, they have all been girls at the same school — but one of the children newly affected might be a boy, according to WHEC News.

In January of this year, about 200 parents and students from the school attended a meeting where Dr. Gregory Young of the state health department discussed the situation. Young said all possible causes — including environment, and vaccinations — had been investigated and ruled out.

Some of the parents in attendance became upset when Dr. Young said that the ill students had been diagnosed, but declined to discuss the diagnosis, citing patient confidentiality.

This upset some of the parents. And a few of the parents of the sick children said that their children had not been formally diagnosed, and have not been receiving treatment.

One of the most outspoken parents, James Dupont, has said that he doesn’t believe that there is a diagnosis, and that the state health department officials don’t really know what’s wrong.

More recently, doctors from Dent Neurology have come forward to discuss the diagnosis with the media. They have been working with 11 of the 12 afflicted girls, and received permission from the parents and patients to talk to the press.

The doctors, Dr. Jennifer McVige and Dr. Jennifer McVige, said they have been working with the girls the whole time, have indeed reached a diagnosis, and have been working with treatments. This seems to be in contradiction with earlier claims made by Mr. Dupont and others.

The girls have been diagnosed with conversion disorder, a stress-related psychological disorder. Treatments can vary from patient to patient, as stressors can be different from person to person. Generally, treatment includes psychotherapy, behavior modification therapy, and medication.

However, all the parents spoke WHEC spoke with say they had discontinued taking their children to Dent Neurology:

All of the parents there [at Sunday's meeting] have been seeking treatment from Dent Neurologic Institute in Buffalo but have recently stopped it. They say they have lost faith in the doctors and they are minimizing the problem.

Miller says the doctors keep saying the girls are getting better, but the parents don’t see it.

Now that there have been at least 2 other children exhibiting these same symptoms, parents want further testing done on the environment; and some of the parents have said they will seek the opinions of other doctors.

Sunday’s meeting was at Mr. Dupont’s TV business. According to Democrat and Chronicle, Mr. DuPont explained that they have been offered aid by several private and governmental groups.
