Twitter To Censor Tweets In Some Countries

After all, can’t just have people going around and coordinating protests; or worse yet, overthrowing governments all on their own.

This was bound to happen eventually. In an effort to expand with as little resistance as possible, Twitter is trying to help governments around the world feel comfortable with the ease and freedom of expression that it’s microblogging platform affords members of the private class.

It’s been pointed out that Twitter, according to its official description, promises to offer up the “latest information about what you find interesting.”

Alas, there’s now a caveat to that. The social media service will offer up the latest information about what you find interesting — and what your government deems acceptable.

Twitter announced Thursday that the company now has the ability to censor tweets on a country-by-country basis, allowing the popular microblogging site to comply with local governments’ request to remove or block certain content.

Incidentally, Diaspora is making more sense as a social networking platform all the time. As the founders of Diaspora have explained, a social network that relies on a central hub can have problems for a number of reasons. Catering to the temperaments of various governments is just one of them.
