Mo. Senator wants to prepare for collapse of the federal government

Wyoming attempted to provide for continuity of local government in the event of a federal collapse. After passing the state house, it failed in a senate vote. Wyoming’s legislation would have put together a committee to explore everything from a state-wide military to state-managed currency.

Now some Missouri politicians are taking a crack at a similar bill, according to Missouri News Horizon. Sen. Chuck Purgason has recently introduced Senate Bill 861, which calls for the creation of a “Task Force on Government Continuity.” The committee would be charged with creating an action plan that could be enacted in the event of a federal government shutdown.

Among the things that the task force would explore are the “possibility of the state creating its own currency as an emergency substitute … [and] coordinating the National Guard and for distributing food and power,” according to the Missouri News article.

It’s interesting to note that, according to Trib.com , “lawmakers in at least six states have introduced legislation to create a state currency [in recent years], all unsuccessfully.”

Even if Missouri’s “doomsday bill” has a similar fate to Wyoming’s, I expect that more state politicians will attempt to put emergency plans in place, in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States. You know, just in case.
