Black Helicopters Descend on Chicago, as City Prepares for NATO Summit

Blackhawks and A/MH-6 Little Bird helicopters used by heavily armed special forces have been circling low through downtown Chicago Monday evening. Some called it a “scary scene” along the Chicago River, as they rattled windows flying among the city’s skyscrapers.

This isn’t the first time black helicopters were reported over Chicago. Just last February, they werereportedly seen “en masse” over the city. One witness stated that the copters had become “a frequent occurrence, happening just about every other day” in February of this year.

What makes this latest incident a little different is that the black helicopters were doing exercises in a very visible part of the city — Chicago’s Loop — during a busy evening. At time they were near the ground, and flew close enough to residential building that some citizens could feel the air from the copter’s blades beating on their windows. Many folks at Marina City got a free air show, as copters filled with armed servicemen and women flew close enough to photograph. (Click images to view larger.)

What also sets this incident apart from the repeated February sightings is that this one was announced.

According to a news release on Monday from Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, Chicago is providing support for the exercise through Thursday. So expect more sightings. Also, according to the news release, this has nothing to do with the NATO summit which will be held in Chicago next month. Riiiight.

Fifty heads of state will attend, with delegates, and will be moving multiple times each day. And theChicago Tribune reports that the most traffic for NATO dignitaries will be between McCormick place and downtown hotels in the Loop, River North and the Gold Coast.

Also on the terror prevention shopping list, according to the Chicago Sun-Times [via FOX News Chicago]:

• Portable high security barriers
• Crowd control barriers
• 10-12 portable light towers
• Sandbags, port-a-potties
• Mobile offices
• 5-10 golf carts

Part of what also caught citizens of Chicago by surprise is that the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications stated that there would be “routine” exercises conducted in the city. Well, what people saw wasn’t routine.
