U.S. Military Making Plans for Alien Invasion

April 8, 2012, Easter morning. While Australian families were at Church, and children were hunting for brightly colored eggs, Australia’s Channel Nine aired a surreal story: “U.S. Military Making Plans for Alien Invasion.”

Surrounded by Easter decorations, a Channel Nine anchor was saying: “Now an alien invasion, could it really happen? The U.S. military is making plans just in case.”

As LBG1 at Death By 1000 Papercuts pointed out, Juliet Lapidos at Slate reported in 2010 that the U.S. government only “sort of” had an “alien-contact contingency plan.”

But if the ‘Today’ report is any indication, things have moved forward in the past few years. Instead of vague ideas on how the U.S. Dept of Defense might respond to an alien invasion, the U.S. Military of 2012 has some very definite contingencies in place.

They spoke with Professor Paul Springer from the U.S. Air Command and Staff College — the USAF Air University. Adding a bit of dramatic flare to the story, Springer apparently had to get special government clearance to appear on the show.

Springer: “It would, but keep in mind that many of the greatest civilizations in human history have been formed, basically, to counter a common enemy. When you look at the great world powers of the globe today, you find a lot of them formed because of the fear of a common enemy.”
