Soviet Defector Brings Secret Warplane To The West

On Sept 6 1976 Lieutenant Viktor Ivanovich Belenko who was a pilot with the 513th fighter regiment 11th army Soviet Air Defense Forces defected to Japan in his Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig 25 Foxbat jet fighter. Western experts had not seen one close up before and it caused a sensation with its various secrets and surprises, Belenko was granted immediate asylum by US President Gerald Ford and interrogated and debriefed for 5 months until giving him employment as a consultant.

The Mig fighter perplexed the US engineers who saw some great refinements but were shocked that this highly advanced aircraft was still using old fashioned valves.

The British asked if they could also see it and a couple of top engineers were hurriedly sent over, the Americans were laughing at the old fashioned valve system, but the British pointed out that the new complex US system was vulnerable.

At the height of the Cold War, we were taught that there would be 3 kinds of atomic blast-

(1) A ground focused blast would clear everything within a given radius, beyond that for approx. 5 times that area would be uninhabitable.

(2) An Atmospheric blast would be a blast in the sky which would destroy a wider area but without the central hub of total devastation

(3) A Stratospheric controlled blast would mean fallout over a huge area but would only affect people, most buildings would survive, this would be the favoured technique where the infrastructure would remain intact, and some weapons such as the Israelis have also carry germ and biological canisters which would spread disease.

Particularly with the latter two blasts, the communications to and from all US planes would be taken out so could not be used, but the Soviets with their valve systems would be unaffected, so could attack the US at will.

The MiG was disassembled, examined, and returned to the USSR in thirty crates. Belenko had brought with him the pilot’s manual for the MiG-25 “Foxbat”, expecting to assist American pilots in evaluating and testing the aircraft. However, the Japanese government only allowed the U.S. to examine the plane and do ground tests of the radar and engines.

The radar was very fast and could work up to within feet of the craft and the destroy mechanisms were integral with the radar making this a very worrying craft to be up against. Belenko was Ukrainian, these people suffered terribly under the communist system, Stalin starved many of them to death, it’s not generally realised that when Hitler pre-empted the planned Russian strike on Germany and went in first, many Russians welcomed him as they felt he would save them from Stalin, the Ukrainians and others have long memories of how communism treated them, and giving info to the west was maybe payback time.

He was not the only pilot to have defected from the USSR in this way, nor was he the first such to defect from a Soviet-bloc country. In March and May 1953, two Polish Air Force pilots flew MiG-15s to Denmark and later in 1953 a North Korean pilot No Kum Sok flew his MiG-15 to an American air base in South Korea; this Mig is on permanent display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force near Dayton, Ohio. In 1985 and 1987, USSR-owned helicopters in the Afghanistan theatre of operations defected to Pakistan; Captain Alexander Zuyev flew his MiG-29 to Trabzon Turkey on May 20, 1989.

In 1980, the U.S. Congress enacted S. 2961, authorizing citizenship for Belenko. It was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter on October 14, 1980, as Private Law 96-62.

As a result of Belenko’s defection, fuel was limited for fighters on Sakhalin bases, which required Maj. Gennady Osipovich, the pilot of the Su-15 interceptor that died in the Korean airlines ‘Flight 007’ to return to base almost immediately after the attack.

In Britain many defectors who gave us so much valuable information in the Cold War theatre, are now at grave risk as Tony Blair opened the floodgates to ex-Soviet Bloc countries and many ex-KGB officers have entered the country on forged Polish passports, and are raking through Eastern communities in search for these people for revenge.
