Human Genome Project: Scientists Discover Second DNA Code

Researchers at the University of Washington (UoW) Department of Genome Sciences and Medicine (GSM) have discovered a new “genetic code within deoxyribonucleic acid, the hereditary material that exists in nearly every cell of the body, was written right on top of the DNA code scientists had already cracked.”

Under the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements Project (ENCODE), the implications of the GSM team’s findings relay as proof that DNA changes the genetic code solely impacting proteins.

ENCODE is an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and USA.gov.

As an outreach of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), ENCODE was created a decade ago to “identify all functional elements in the human genome sequence.”

Previous theories held this as fact, when it is now apparent “that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture. Many DNA changes that appear to alter protein sequences may actually cause disease by disrupting gene control programs or even both mechanisms simultaneously.”

The 64 identified codons, or letter alphabet of DNA, are not singular in meaning.

In fact, it became clear to the researchers that certain codons have multiple meanings, now referred to as duons.

The duons are “new elements of DNA language have one meaning related to protein sequence and another that is related to gene control.”

John Stamatoyannopoulos, lead author of the study, said : “It’s a marvel. Now we know that this basic assumption about reading the human genome missed half of the picture. Many DNA changes that appear to alter protein sequences may actually cause disease by disrupting gene control programs or even both mechanisms simultaneously.”
