January 30, 2014: Blue Moon/Black Moon (New Moon)
This Thursday (1/30/2014) is a Blue Moon- the second New Moon in less than 30 days for January 2014. Next month February there will not be a New Moon so make the most of this one. (March 1, 2014 will be another New Moon when Mercury goes retrograde)
Blue Moons carry with them special energy for magic, mayhem and manifestations. New Moons are a good time to pray for new starts and new beginnings. This Blue Moon in the sign of Aquarius which is an air sign and rules our minds and thoughts, innovations and inventions, computers and electronics, friends and enemies, and occult sciences and telepathy.
If you did not make your New Years’ resolutions or wishes for this year, then you are given a second chance. Lucky for some.
According to The Old Way of Tradition, the second New Moon to appear in the same calendar month is called the Black Moon, and any magick worked during this period is deemed to be extremely powerful as well. Of course, the chances of two New Moons falling within one calendar month are just the same as two Full Moons, but because New Moons are generally invisible, most people tend not to notice when a month has two of them.
An example of a prayer/mantra to use for a blue/black moon magic:
“Money, money come to me
In abundance three times three
May I be enriched in the best of ways
Harming none on its way
This I accept, so mote it be
Bring me money three times three!”.

You have no idea what a Blue Moon/Black Moon is. Refer to the Farmers Almanac. Blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has 4 full moons in it. Seasons normally have only three and they are named according to the season, (early summer moon, mid summer moon, and late summer moon for example) but every 3.7 years a season will have four. The third full moon will be the Blue moon, the last one was in Aug 2013. A black moon is the same thing but corresponding to the New as opossed to the Full moons.
Actually Doug, since 1946, the original poster would be correct – Sky & Telescope magazine misprinted the instructions, and hence, the 2nd Full Moon in a month became a ‘Blue Moon’.
In reality, the ‘Blue Moon’ you reference as ‘original’ comes from the Catholics. In the rare event where four Full Moons come in a singular season, the third moon was said to come ‘Belewe’ or ‘Early’, and as usual, non-Catholics mutilated it to say ‘BLUE’ not ‘Belewe’.
Again Doug, you are quite wrong about ‘Black Moon’ too. ‘Black Moon’ is the pagan term for the post-1946 ‘Blue Moon’, as for centuries it has meant the event of TWO FULL MOONS in a singular solar month.
Obviously, you need reference material Doug. Here – let me help – it’s called THE ENCYCLOPEDIA.
This is why I always read the comment section on BIN. Thanks!
In response to both Doug and Dustdevil, I think it is necessary to clarify a few points. First of all, the term “black moon” has several, distinct meanings. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, it is the third new moon in a season in which there are four new moons. At the same time, in modern parlance, the black moon has come to represent the second new moon in a calendar month.
I have not studied the history of the two uses to determine which is older, etc., but, as with many words, terms like “black moon” can have two (or more) meanings. So, no one has to be wrong, and no one has to attack anyone else in order to seem smarter and be “right.” There are just several meanings to phrase “black moon”.
Supposedly, there are more than two meanings to this term, but again, I have not studied this in depth.
