Shark attacks are result of secret black budget Navy program, claims whistleblower

Earlier today, Journal of the Bizarre published a series of emails written by a West German marine biologist who claims that the U.S. Navy is responsible for the recent wave of shark attacks throughout the world. The retired biologist, identified as “Hans”, stated that he worked on a top-secret project between 1962 and 1968 at a research facility in Point Mugu, California, and later at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center in San Diego. The project, known as “Project Lamia”, was a Cold War-era measure designed to create a large population highly-aggressive, genetically-modified sharks that would be released in the Strait of Florida to suppress a potential Cuban response to the Bay of Pigs invasion.

The biologist claims that Project Lamia was the brainchild of John P. Craven, who would later be appointed Chief Scientist of the Special Projects Office for the Navy. It has been a well-documented fact that Craven devoted much of his career to weather modification, even serving as head of President Carter’s Weather Modification Commission.

In the Journal of the Bizarre article, Hans explains:

“From the beginning, Project Lamia was classified as a black budget program. As our project grew in size, my team (there were six of us involved in Project Lamia; myself and two other West German biologists, one Swiss geneticist, and one other American geneticist) required a larger facility, and so the Navy moved us from Point Mugu to Point Loma, where we worked under the direction of Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego. By 1967, our entire spectrum of operations was classified as black budget, including the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program, those scientists studying dolphin intelligence. People often ask me why dolpin intelligence was considered “top secret” and classified as a black budget program, and the reason was because several of us who worked on Project Lamia also worked and shared facilities with the mammal program.

“Our immediate goal was to solve the problem of gestation. While the gestation period for a dolphin or a whale is around 17 months, the gestation period of several shark species is about 24 months. We chose to work with species with much shorter gestation periods, such as the bull shark, which has a 12 month gestation period, tiger sharks, which have a 16 month gestation period, the blue shark, which has a gestation period of around 9 months, and the great white, with a gestation period of 11 months. It is no surprise, then, that the four shark species we worked with also happen to be 4 of the 5 species responsible for the most attacks on humans. This is not a coincidence.

“By injecting shark pups with various hormones, we were able to accomplish two things: bring them to sexual maturity at a younger age, and significantly shorten the gestation period. During my seven years working on Project Lamia, we were able to produce four generations of genetically-modified bull sharks and blue sharks, and three generations of great whites and tiger sharks- with each subsequent generation more aggressive than the last. This was accomplished by placing the newly-born pups into a large tank and observing their behavior. Pups that did not display signs of aggression were released, while the aggressive male pups were injected with hormones and brought quickly to sexual maturity and then bred with adult females. After each birth the cycle was repeated.”

According to Hans, the sharks were also released in the Strait of Tiran and several points in the Gulf of Suez by the Israeli military. You may recall that in 2010, after a wave of shark attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, conspiracy theorists accused the Israeli government of planting aggressive sharks in Egyptian waters.
