The Republican Establishment’s Greatest Fear is Another Loss Like They Had in 1980

Quick history lesson: an insurgent, divisive Republican candidate was making waves. He threatened to break the Republican Establishment’s hold on the party. They attacked him. They threw candidate after candidate at him. They did everything they could to make the press and the people believe that he would be the worst thing for America. The year was 1979. The candidate was Ronald Reagan.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because we’re seeing the exact same type of attacks being leveled on Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. What most in the Republican party fail to realize is that the power brokers of the Republican Establishment have been pulling the strings for the last seven election cycles. They took back control of the party when their 1979 champion, George H. W. Bush, won the 1988 election on the merits of representing another term for Reagan. As it turned out, he wasn’t the conservative that Reagan was and so they lost their grip on the White House but not the party. They gave us Bob Dole in 1996. They gave us George W. Bush in 2000. More on him in a moment. They gave us John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.

Over the decades, they’ve been able to put big government moderate Republicans in position to be nominated for the Presidency. Now, they’re trying to do it again because they don’t like Donald Trump and they are absolutely terrified of Ted Cruz. This is prompting them to prepare for a very dangerous and damaging war against the two current frontrunners that may not only cost the party its soul but may cost the American people the opportunity to break from the devastating policies of President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

That’s okay for the Republican Establishment. As hard as it is to believe, they would prefer to have a Democrat in the White House than a small government Republican like Cruz or a wildcard like Trump. With the Democrats, less damage can be done to their corporate hold of power. With Cruz for certain and possibly with Trump, they could face damages that they’re not willing to accept. It’s not that they fear Cruz or Trump would fail. They fear that Cruz or Trump would succeed and cause a ripple effect that would tear at the foundation of the Republican Establishment that they’ve worked so hard to maintain for decades.

Now, let’s discuss George W. Bush since he was their greatest accomplishment. Some may recall that he ran on relatively conservative issues in 2000 and ran on the war on terror platform in 2004. Republicans might argue that his conservative stances on the Middle East demonstrate that he’s not a Republican Establishment puppet, but the exact opposite is true. While the Middle East and geopolitics in general are important to the “Washington Cartel,” they’re only as important as their business and power interests dictate. George W. Bush represented the type of hawkish military adventurism that the Republican Establishment’s agenda craves while still espousing the big government domestic and economic policies that represent the path to their end game. George W. Bush wasn’t an anomaly in their plan. He was the embodiment of it.

Some will start to question whether these conspiracy theories have any merit. American in general and Republicans in particular do not want to think of the government puppeteers as being anything other than semi-greedy but generally good-hearted people who want power but who will still do the right thing when it comes down to it. This isn’t true. They are not going to do the best thing for America or Americans. They will do the best thing for parts of America and some Americans. This minority that they protect can and will leave the rest of us behind when the going gets tough. Soon, the going will be getting tough and the majority of us are in the crosshairs of political expediency.

The Democrats are dangerous, but the Republican Establishment is as dangerous if not more so. We must see beyond their lies and elect a true conservative as President. Bowing down to their chosen candidate, whether it’s Marco Rubio or Chris Christie, will be the gravest of mistakes for everyone other than those pulling the strings.
