A Monster at the Edge of the World

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the most intriguing news items that I have seen in awhile comes to us from RT. Sometimes the truth is stranger than science fiction.

For those that don’t know RT is Russia Today. This news channel is sponsored by Russian government but it known for not hiding anything news related. Russia Today has been covering American news better than the American news media.

So the news! I like to call it “A Monster at the Edge of the World!” Seems like a great title for the newest big blockbuster movie coming to your local theater. You would be right and wrong at the same time. Yes, this would be a movie title that would have me looking up the times to see it but you would also be wrong if you thought this is fiction. It is true. They have caught sight of an enormous creature breaking the water off the coast of Antarctica by Google Earth.

Some have even reported it as being a Kracken. A Kracken is describes as being:

The Kraken (/ˈkrɑːkən/)[1] is a legendary sea monster of giant size that is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. A number of authors over the years have postulated that the legend originated from sightings of giant squids that may grow to 12–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length, despite the fact that the creature in the original tales was not described as having tentacles and more closely resembled a whale or crab. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the kraken have made it a common ocean-dwelling monster in various fictional works.

A creature this size has been known by a lot of names over the years. Leviathan:

Leviathan (/lᵻˈvaɪ.əθən/; Hebrew: לִוְיָתָן, Modern Livyatan, Tiberian Liwyāṯān ; “twisted, coiled”) is a sea monster referenced in theTanakh, or the Old Testament.

This word has become synonymous with any large sea monster or creature. In literature (e.g., Herman Melville‘s Moby-Dick) it refers to great whales, and in Modern Hebrew, it simply means “whale”. It is described extensively in Book of Job 41 and mentioned inJob 3:8, Amos 9:3, Psalm 74:13–23, Psalm 104:26 and Isaiah 27:1

If you are into mythological creatures you might even call this huge beast a Behemoth.

Behemoth (/bᵻˈhiːməθ/ or /ˈbiː.əməθ/, also /ˈbeɪ.əmɔːθ/; Hebrew: בהמות‎‎, behemoth (modern: behemot)) is a beast mentioned inJob 40:15–24. Suggested identities range from a mythological creature to an elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros or buffalo.[1]Some Young Earth creationists believe it to be a description of a dinosaur. Metaphorically, the name has come to be used for any extremely large or powerful entity.

It could be even called a dragon.

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, that features in the myths of many cultures. There are two distinct cultural traditions of dragons: the European dragon, derived from European folk traditions and ultimately related to Greek and Middle Eastern mythologies, and the Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan (namely the Japanese dragon), Korea and other East Asian countries.[1]

The two traditions may have evolved separately, but have influenced each other to a certain extent, particularly with the cross-cultural contact of recent centuries. The English word dragon derives from Greek δράκων (drákōn), “dragon, serpent of huge size, water-snake”.[2]

If you are more of a modernist than you would call it a dinosaur.

Dinosaurs are a diverse group of animals of the clade Dinosauria. They first appeared during the Triassic period, 231.4 million years ago, and were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for 135 million years, from the start of the Jurassic (about 200 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (66 million years ago),[1] when the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event led to the extinction of most dinosaur groups at the end of the Mesozoic Era.
