Brunch at Bokx 109 in Newton

Kevin and I had the pleasure of attending brunch (courtesy of Boston Brunchers) at Bokx 109 American Prime over the long Memorial Day weekend. They serve a delicious Champagne Brunch on Sundays, and nestled into one of their cushy, over-sized booths, we indulged. Before our visit I made a point to peruse the menu, so we had an idea of what we had to look forward to!

For our brunch at Bokx 109, located inside the Indigo Hotel in Newton, I looked at the menu weeks ahead of time. The first thing that struck me was a burrito called “The Dougie”, and I knew pretty much from the get-go that I’d order that. Other items TBD, there were WAY too many enticing options. Fortunately I had Kevin with me to decide!

As far as brunch menus go, I thought this one was particularly strong. Heavy on the savory options, but a wide variety of options, and definitely a few sweet bites in there if that’s your preference. I generally like to do a mix of savory and sweet, and that’s precisely what we did.

Despite the soggy weather outside, we both opted for cool, refreshing Bloody Mary’s to start off the meal. I am a tad bit picky when it comes to my brunch libations – particularly Bloody Mary’s – but I found theirs to be nicely balanced and not too strong in any flavor. The horseradish was dominant, but not overpowering, and I really liked it. My only complaint – the dried out lime wedge stuck to the rim! It’s a simple thing, but always bothers me when I noticed it at restaurants. Please, take 15 seconds and cut a fresh lime for me!

To start, we chose to split the BLT Salad. The salad had sugar cane cured pork belly, a sous vide crispy egg, tarragon and bacon vinaigrette and oil cured tomatoes. My first reaction was to it’s appearance, which was beautiful and made me want to dive right in. All of the ingredients were so fresh, and expertly executed. The sous vide egg had firm egg whites but a liquid yolk center, which was a loevly touch, and the pork belly bacon was crispy and loaded with flavor. Normally we tend to devour whatever is put in front of us, but we savored this salad until the very last bite.

The Dougie was everything I hoped it would be, and more. It came with mac and cheese inside, a big surprise since we didn’t see that listed on the menu, but what a delicious (and sinful) twist! This breakfast panini was absolutely LOADED with flavor, and I admittedly had a hard time sharing half with Kevin. We agreed to split everything, but this I did NOT want to split – at all! If I went back, I would get this again, and keep it all to myself. In addition to the AWESOME sandwich, the fries were also quite tasty. Lightly crispy and well seasoned. Total home run.

The cinnamon crunch french toast sadly was not on par with The Dougie. The bread featured here was a dense cinnamon quick bread, a major departure from the traditional brioche french toast, but I actually found it to be a bit too dense – and decidedly too cinnamon-y. The crunchy bruleed banana was delightful, as was the unique and interesting strawberry tarragon butter. I also liked the addition of the chocolate pearls and white chocolate chips – they added a sweet, creamy element. If you got banana, chocolate, strawberry butter, french toast and syrup in each bite, it was definitely tasty, just not my favorite rendition of french toast. I definitely saved a few bites of The Dougie for the end!

Overall, we really enjoyed this breakfast. The cavernous dining space was only about 1/4 full when we were there, but the soothing music, attentive staff, comfy seats and window view made it relaxing and fun. It’s a bit out of the way for us, but I don’t doubt we’ll be back!
