A Return to Brunching at Puritan & Company

It’s been a long time since I had the pleasure of joining other hungry brunchers for a meal, but last weekend I had the pleasure of dining with the Boston Brunchers crew again. We met for a mid-day brunch at Puritan + Co. in Inman Square, for a cozy Sunday brunch. This was my first trip to Puritan & Company, and it was somewhat unlike what I had imagined – much brighter, and more airy, with lots of natural light, bright walls, and a subtle country decor. It was comfy and relaxed and I felt like I fit right in. Always such a nice environment to dine in!

We started the meal with a wonderful pastry basket, and while I got to try a small bite of each offering, I was careful not to fill up entirely before the main event. Of all the pastries we sampled, the Boston Cream Donut was probably my favorite, though there was also a Dulce De Leche and Coconut Danish that was pretty out of this world. We attempted to order one of their Cashew Sticky Buns, but were informed that they only make a limited quantity each day (that day, 6) – so if that’s your thing, make sure to get there early!

For the main course, we were each able to pick one item off of the brunch menu, and I immediately went for the Wagyu Steak and Eggs. It seemed like a popular choice, as many at the table indulged in the same thing! To go along with my meal, I got a delicious cocktail – the Park Avenue - which had gin, pineapple and sweet vermouth. The pineapple portion was actually a pineapple shrub, and it was really delicious. The cocktail was well-balanced, smooth and flavorful – I loved it! Definitely a less traditional take on the breakfast cocktail, which was a welcome change for me. But if you’re more of a traditionalist, they also offer a Mimosa, and a Bloody Mary.

The steak was expertly cooked, and the eggs perfectly runny. There is really nothing like a well-executed sunny-side up egg. The well-seasoned potatoes were pretty standard, crispy on the edges and tender in the centers, and acted as a great vehicle for sopping up egg yolk. On the side was a serving of the lightest and most airy hollandaise sauce I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. I’ve never seen anything like it — it’s almost like it was whipped cream — but the taste was spot on. Even the accompanying lightly dressed greens and seemingly simple little toasts were delicious, and I, admittedly, ate every. single. bite.

I also snapped a photo of this Broccoli and Cheddar Scramble, which was said to be well executed and tasty.

This was such a lovely brunch, and one of the first times in a long time that I let myself just veg out and relax. So grateful for that opportunity. The waitstaff was really friendly, attentive and patient, which is important when you dine with such a large group, and they did a wonderful job with the meal. It was especially nice of Chef Will Gilson to swing out and visit with us before we departed. He’s certainly got a good thing going!

Thanks again to Boston Brunchers and Puritan & Co — I already can’t wait for the next event… and my next trip to Puritan & Co, this time for dinner!
