Cereal Wheat Bread and Degustabox

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As soon as I saw the box of Nutribix Cereal in the February Degustabox, I knew exactly what I wanted to make as my recipe for the month.  I have been making a bread for about 40 years now that uses wheat cereal biscuits and I thought this cereal would be perfect for that.  You can make it in either small loaves, or in buns.  I did buns, but both would be beautiful.  It’s a hearty bread and very tasty!  More about that later, first I’d like to tell you about the other products I received in this box.

To those not in the know, if you sign up for it, once a month, every month . . . Degustabox will deliver to your home . . .  9 to 14 new, special or innovative food products for you to try in the comfort of your own home via a subscription service. A monthly subscription costs £9.99 and there is a delivery fee of £3, for a total of £12.99, and what you receive can be tailored to the types of things that you like and would use. To me it’s a bit like a foodie Christmas every month of the year! I really love them! This is what was in my latest box . . .

HARTLEY’S jelly and fruit in jelly 2 X 50p + 2 X 70p

Hartley’s jelly pots are the family dessert favourite you know and love but in a handy pot. Hartley’s jelly pots can be stored in the cupboard or fridge making them the perfect portable snack.

New Hartley’s Fruit in Jelly pots are tasty jelly pots bursting with fruit pieces in a range of scrumptious flavours. Containing no artificial flavours or colours, these jelly pots are also suitable for vegetarians. Delicious and refreshing, pop a pot of Hartley’s Fruit in Jelly into a lunchbox or as an after dinner treat.

We both quite enjoy these.  My refrigerator is rather small so I often keep these pots in the cupboard as Jelly makes a nice snack an I love that they are low in calories and free of artificial colours and preservatives.  Yum!

SARSON’S Malt Vinegar 1 X £0.70

Sarson’s, the UK’s number one vinegar brand, is set to launch a new limited edition Malt Vinegar bottle featuring its well loved ‘Fish and Chip’ characters created by artist Paul Thurlby.

This has always been our choice “Go With” when we are eating chips.  It’s a must.

MR’S KIPLING  Exceedingly Good Slices 1 X £1.49

New Exceedingly Good Slices. A moist golden oaty cake with tasty wholesome ingredients like fruit, coconut and oats for a delicious permissible treat! Chocolate & Coconut: Dark chocolate chips a sprinkle of coconut and topped with British jumbo oats. Fruity Cranberry & Orange: Sprinkled With honey toasted British Oats.

We got the Cranberry, Orange and Oat Slices and they were very exceedingly good!   I also like that Mr Kipling uses the traffic light system of nutrition on it’s packaging.

DIVINE 2 X £1.00

Do you have a soft spot for caramel? Mid-afternoon is just the time for a sweet treat, which is why Divine Caramel bars hit the 3 ‘o clock #DivineSoftSpot! All Divine products are Fairtrade, natural, suitable for vegetarians and free from palm oil. Divine Caramel Bars are available to buy at Tesco, Oxfam, Traidcraft & divinechocolate.com.

Divine is the only chocolate company in the UK that is 100% Fairtrade and farmer-owned. That means all our products are Fairtrade certified and the largest shareholder of the company is Kuapa Kokoo, a co-operative of small-holder farmers in Ghana. We include as many Fairtrade ingredients as possible in our products, so, for example, that means our caramel bars (like all Divine Chocolate) contain sugar from Kasinthula, a Fairtrade co-operative in Malawi. You might like to know that they are palm oil free too!

Did you know Oxfam sells a range of Fairtrade food and drink? A full range of Divine Chocolate is available all year round in hundreds of Oxfam shops across the UK. The Divine Caramel bars are also available to buy at hundreds of Tesco supermarkets across the country.

There was both a dark and a milk bar included and we both enjoyed them very much.   This was a nice treat!

We quite enjoyed this delicious carrot juice as a part of our mid morning drink splurge.  Healthy and tasty!

VITHIT 1 X £1.80

There are a lot of drinks out there that will get your heart pumping like a thirsty oil pump on a Texas morning, but we prefer the alternative approach. Vit Hit is the Juice based soft drink with 100% Recommended Daily Allowance of 8 different vitamins, no added sugar and with fewer than 35 calories per bottle. With health giving teas and minerals for overall wellbeing VitHit contains real juice and no preservatives, artificial colourings or flavourings. Vithit was created because of a lack of healthy drinks available in our fridges today.

‘Most drinks contain buckets of sugar. Sugar means calories, and people no longer want calories in their diet’ says Gary Lavin Managing director and creator of VITHIT. ‘I created VITHIT because I used to see people on treadmills for 30 minutes burning calories then coming off and taking those calories back in with a sports drink’. ‘Most sports drinks contain 180 calories, sugar and salts, not exactly ideal for weight loss’. ‘Our first mission was to make sure our drinks tasted as good or better than their sugary counterparts, then add as much goodness without compromising on taste’.

Crisp and fresh, and definitely something I would drink again.

THE  LONDON CRISP COMPANY 1 X £229

Hand-cooked in the heart of the capital, our great tasting crisps combine classic crunch with no-nonsense flavours. Each of our 5 delicious flavours takes inspiration from a different area of the fantastic capital city of London and they can be found in Fuller’s pubs across London, as well as in Waitrose, Tesco and Selfridges.

Naughty but very nice.

RITZ CRISP & THIN 1 X £2.19

A delicious oven-baked potato snack that brings a touch of glamour to any situation, so whether you’re snacking solo or amongst friends you can always Put on the Ritz. Available in four tantalisingly tasty flavours – Cream Cheese & Onion, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sweet Red Chilli and Sea Salt & Black Pepper.

These were a delicious alternative to some fattier snack options.  I enjoyed them very much and actually went out and purchased another bag when I saw them on offer at the shops.

NUTRIBIX  1 X £3.79

Nutribix is a new wholegrain cereal that will keep you and your body happy. Welcome to your new daily ritual for a good breakfast and a better morning. Packed with nutritious wholegrains and some of nature’s yummiest ingredients. Nutribix will make you excited to dive into your cereal bowl and say ‘Let’s Go!’ in the mirror before you start your day. Crunch and pop fans take note!

With Gold and Grains we’ve lovingly created what we believe is the crunchiest, tastiest and most delicious breakfast around. Using coconut, honey and the ancient grain Sorghum this makes the perfect choice for anyone who really wants to get going in the morning. Currently available in Sainsbury’s and on Ocado.

Coeliac and gluten-free foodies rejoice! Your light, crunchy, flaky, wheaty cereal (without the wheat) is here in the shape of our other product also out on shelf, Nutribix Gluten Free. We are so happy that those are are Gluten intolerant are able to enjoy a bowl of cereal again. Currently available in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons and on Ocado.

This of course was the product I chose to highlight with a recipe this  month.  Normally I use another wheat brand cereal in this bread recipe, but I am happy to say that the Nutribix worked perfectly in this!

These rolls are lovely with a beautiful texture and flavour.  They won’t rise as much as regular white bread rolls would, but they are a deliciously healthy alternative!

You can also bake it as a whole loaf, in which case it makes 2 small loves of a deliciously hearty bread!  These rolls went down a real treat with a hot bowl of soup!  They were also pretty tasty on their own.  Is it just me, or does everyone have to enjoy a hot roll fresh out of the oven spread with cold butter for a really delicious taste treat???

*Cereal Wheat Bread*

Makes two loaves

A recipe I adapted to use some delicious wheat biscuit cereal I received.  You can use any pressed wheat cereal in this.

250ml milk (1 cup)

2 ounces butter (1/4 cup)

2 dessert spoons of soft light brown sugar

(about 1/4 cup loosely packed)

1 tsp salt

5 pressed wheat cereal biscuits crumbled

2 tsp quick yeast

1 large free range egg

280g of bread flour (2 cups)

Warm the milk with the butter just until the butter melts.  Crumble the cereal into a bowl, add the brown sugar and salt.  Pour the milk mixture over top and let stand until lukewarm.   Stir in the yeast and beat in the egg.   Stir in the flour until it is thoroughly incorporated.  Knead until smooth, about 10 minutes.   Place into a lightly oiled boil, cover with a clean towel and set aside to rise until it has doubled in size.

Punch down.  Knead for about 1 minute on a floured board and divide in half.  Shape each half into a  small loaf and place into two buttered loaf tins.  Cover and allow to ise in a warm draft free place for another hour until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 180*C/350*F/ gas mark 4.  Bake the read for 30 minutes until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow on the bottom when tapped.  Cool on wire racks.  Slice to serve.

Note- Dough may also be shaped into approximately 16 rolls.  Bake and rise times will be approximately the same, although I would check them at 20 to 25 minutes just to be sure.

I really do have to apologise to the people at Degustabox for my tardiness in posting about the February Box.  I had some severe health issues to deal with this month, which interrupted my plan of action!

Many thanks to Degustabox for sending me this box. I have to say I really look forward to getting my box each month. There are always lots of things in it to enjoy and new products to try out. I highly recommend. You can also tailor the boxes to your own likes and dislikes by filling in your own Taste Profile. I also have a code which is worth a £6.00 discount off your first box when registering. Simply use the code: BLDEG15
