Cozy Maple Whiskey Sour
You guys… It’s so cold in here, I could cut glass.
I’m not even kidding.
It seems Winter hath arriveth, with great force and vengeance.
And in Vancouver, that means sopping wet, windy and dark.
The moisture just gets into the bone. And not in the sexy way.
I’ve taken to seeking refuge indoors, locked far away from the windows that make up one full wall of my apartment, with the heat cranked, and donning hand-knitted socks from this gem & sweaters that are so old and pilled and stretched out, they have no business being seen anywhere but the dark-by-4pm corners of my laundry room. With the door firmly closed.
TMI: Sometimes I feel the same way about my vagina.
Uhhh…. Awkward…?
Basically I’m just trying to keep cozy and not freeze my nipples off. Or have them poke an eye out. Because let’s be honest – when it’s this chilly and you have girls as – ahem, ample – as mine, it’s a real risk.
Much like having trouble finding dresses that fit in the waist, the bust AND the ass. Or accidentally recreating a scene from Baywatch while on vacation. Or letting one slip out in an unfortunate wardrobe-malfunction to get free french fries at the drive-thru, at 3am, after consuming oceans of whiskey.
Totally hypothetical, by the way.
I’ve also stored away the Summer Mint Cucumber & Smoky Jalapeneo Margaritas , Gin Old Fashioneds and Sparkling Rhubarb Shrubs in favour of more cozy drinks like the Winter Wonderjam Whiskey Smash, Fire Cider Hot Toddy and Nog-Casian.
Oh yeah! And today’s recipe: A maple whiskey sour with sage simple syrup.
Cozy? Hell yeah. Boozy? You betcha. Likely to land you in one of the afore mentioned precarious situations? It’s entirely possible.
Cozy is clearly the over-arching theme of this post. That, and inappropriate jokes about my breasts. And it was inspired by a group of bloggers I consider dear friends. The Connecting Over Cocktails club (#FBCConnectingOverCocktails). These peeps got mad skillz and I’m so grateful they’re part of our community. I really do have the best friends in the world – they’re supportive, talented, inspiring, challenge me to do and be better both on the blog and in life, and best of all, like to socialize over 1 (or 8) drinks. And I’m thrilled to share their “cozy” concoctions with you here today as well. Feel free to rub up against them – I do. They like it.

- 1 C water
- 3/4 C pure maple syrup
- 1/2 C fresh sage leaves
- 2 1/2 shots bourbon whiskey
- 1 shot sage simple syrup
- 1 shot fresh lemon juice (approximately 1 juicy lemon)
- 1 egg white
- Ice
- Lemon zest
- Optional: Bourbon Soaked Cherries
- Place all ingredients in a pot over medium-high heat on the stove. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool. Strain into a clean non-reactive container (i.e. a mason jar) and keep for up to 1 week in the fridge.
- Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker or mason jar. Cover tightly. Shake for 30 seconds as fast and as hard as you can. Be careful if using a mason jar that you don’t break the glass with the ice.
- Strain into rocks or coupe glasses and garnish with a strip of lemon zest and if using, a bourbon cherry.
- When slicing the zest off your lemon, make sure you remove any white pith on the under-belly of the zest – it’s very bitter and you don’t want to drink that.
