Why Anthony Weiner’s Resignation Is Bad For America
Representative Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress this afternoon, unable to take the ribbing from the public and his fellow Democrats over scandalous photos and messages exchanged with women via Twitter and Facebook. Though there was talk of an ethics probe, no official misconduct — i.e., use of public resources to conduct his online dalliances — had yet come to light. Weiner said he was tendering his resignation because he was providing too much of a distraction from the country’s real issues.
Weiner is obviously not an awesome guy. Married men shouldn’t be sending lewd shots to ladies who are not their wives (unless their wives have condoned such things). He also isn’t a very smart guy. No one should be sending their dirty pics via Twitter.
But the exchange of dirty pictures and messages on one’s personal time shouldn’t mean the end of their professional career. more
