Ballard's Design Candle Holder

If you are anything like me you’ve been receiving an avalanche of catalogs in the mail lately.  One of my favorites is Ballard’s Design.  I LOVE that catalog!!!!  I mean LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that catalog.  I don’t think that there is anything in that catalog that you could give me that I wouldn’t love.
While perusing it the back in October, I came across these awesome oyster shell candle holders.

Maybe I was feeling a little home sick and that’s why I was drawn to them.  I can remember spending summers at my Aunt’s farm, by the beach, every summer for a week.  Most of the driveways were made from oyster shells then.  My cousins used to call me, my older brother and my younger sister, city slickers because we couldn’t run barefooted on the oyster shells the way they could.  We were too tender footed.  I remember it used to make me so mad!  I wanted nothing more than to prove them wrong.  I just couldn’t understand it.  In Houston, we ran around all summer barefooted – on nice smooth concrete! lol

Anyway, like I said, I kept coming back to these candle holders.  They aren’t the prettiest candle holders but they are so different.  I love the gray candles that they have paired with them below.

And I love all of the different iridescent colors that nature has provided on the inside of the oyster shells.  I love the organic shape of them.  No two shells are alike.  I was just drawn to these candle holders and I knew that I could make them myself!

I knew that the shells must be pretty easy to get.  I just didn’t know where to get them.  I had never seen them at my usual haunts – Michael’s, Hobby Lobby or Dollar Tree.  I started with Etsy and found none there.  Next I went to EBay – BINGO – I found several “Buy It Now” opportunities for oyster shells.  I ended up purchasing a huge box of them for about $10.00 including shipping.
While I waited for the oyster shells to arrive, I went shopping for a candle holder to attach the shells to.  Ballard’s candle holders are made of bronze finish metal and fiber glass.  I decided to look for something either made from glass or some type of metal.  It also had to have a large cup for the candle to rest on like the one pictured above.  Most of all, I did not want to spend a lot of money for something I was just going to cover up.
I started by going to Goodwill.  Strike one.  Next I went to Walmart.  Strike two.  Next I went to a different Goodwill and I hit a home run with this candy dish?  I’m not sure if that is really what it is but for lack of a better name that is what I am calling it.
I only paid $1.91 for it.  I have yet to figure out how they price things here in the suburbs of Atlanta.  I asked one day but all they told me was that whatever the price stated with it would end with.  Weird.  If anyone out there could enlighten me, I would be most grateful.
I used Loctite Glue to attach the oyster shells to the base of the candy dish.  Once they dried I glued the next layer of oyster shells on, attaching them to the neck of the candy dish, as well as the oyster shells below.
Since the candy dish was so short, it didn’t take long to complete.  This is what the final product looks like.
Needless to say, I had lots of oyster shells left over, so keep your eye out for my next project made from oyster shells!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!!

Oh, I too loved seeing those in the Ballard Design catalog! I also loved their Oyster Christmas trees! My sister lives on a marsh and I thought something like this would look wonderful in her home. Thank you so much for the blog!
