DIY Tips & Tricks - From A Garage To A Game Room - The Basics

DIY tips & tricks

When it comes to redecorating, owning a house certainly comes with a myriad of options. Adding a room, restructuring the kitchen or simply extending the bathroom are just a few. However, the space often neglected is the garage, as it turns into a place where all things not good enough to use, but not bad enough to throw away are stored, and eventually forgotten. But, it doesn’t have to be so. An idea that will certainly sound interesting, especially to those who have a game lover living with them, is to turn the garage into a game room. If you want to create such a space, here is what you should bear in mind.

Use your space wisely. As garage tends to be small, planning your game room ahead is absolutely necessary. Measure your garage beforehand, and then when you’re deciding on the items that will go in, measure them as well to see if they’ll fit and how much free space there will be left afterward. Keep the things to a minimum, lest you overcrowd your space, and keep in mind that you need at least three to five square feet around your game table in order not to trip over. Plasma TVs or LCDs come handy here, because they are thin and can be bolted up to a wall, saving space. Folding furniture, especially one that can be tucked under the table is also a good idea. Multifunctional furniture comes pretty handy as well, if you can get your hands on some. Try some DIY drink holders built in the chair armrests or the like: they’ll keep your drink handy and keep it from spilling over furniture or game equipment. Just think “saving space” and you’ll do fine.

Pick the right furniture. As said before, think of saving space, but that’s not the only concern. If you are planning on spending a lot of time in your game room, you should get some ergonomically designed chairs, so you don’t damage your back. Also, if your TV is going to be placed high, choose some chairs with neck support. If the accent is going to be placed more on video games instead of board games, then go for Sound Egg chairs, since they provide the best gaming experience.

Insulate your garage. There are two aspects to consider: heat insulation and sound insulation. To prevent heat loss, make sure your garage entrance is properly insulated, since this is where most of the heat is usually lost. Sound dissipation is a problem mostly for the neighbors, so you need to be considerate. Now, egg-cartons are great at insulating sound, but not that good as a heat insulators. Think styrofoam for a good combination for both. Two sets of walls with air in between can also be a good idea, so you can give some thought to that as well.

Games and more games! Having multiple consoles may appear tricky at first, but you can use a neat trick: make a simple wooden or metal rack and place all of your consoles on it, with the TV on top; plug them all to an extension cord, preferably one with an on/off switch to avoid a fire; buy a TV plug-in switch (those things are super cheap) and connect the consoles to the TV. This way, you never have to run around your game room, plugging things in and out.
Choose the best sound system. I wholeheartedly recommend going for a 5.1 sound system. They give off the best gaming experience, especially in a neatly packed garage. If possible, you should consider recessed speakers in the walls. This eliminates all the mess with the wires and makes the sound come off more natural.
Certainly everyone should feel free to do things their own way. The most important thing in the end is to make a place custom built for yourself and your enjoyment, possibly while having fun along the way.
