New front door colour + an update on the most embarrassing spot in our yard

I’ve wanted to change our front door colour for awhile, and I was determined to get it done before the weather turns too cold to paint. I decided on classic red, because really, where else can you get away with a red that bright? I wrote about how I prepped and painted the door the first time around here, and I’m really happy with how my paint job held up over the past three years. I decided to stick with Behr paint, but this time I opted for exterior paint and primer in one (the sales person at Home Depot advised me that good coverage is tricky with reds). The colour is Behr’s Stiletto Love, and well, I love it.
I snapped this photo with my phone on the way out the door one morning, so it’s a bit blue, but I’ll snap some better photos after a few more updates (I finally ordered new house numbers and a new light!).

We had some fun over the weekend, too. Hannah had her first ballet class, which she loved, and we celebrated by hitting up our favourite bagel place afterwards. We also made a trip to the ‘Today Park’, Hannah’s nickname for the park on the Halifax waterfront (she has her own names for all the parks around us). Technically the wave isn’t part of the park, but try telling the kids that.

While we’ve made great progress killing the Japanese Knotweed next to our driveway this summer, progress had pretty much stalled on the fenced-off area next to our garage. With time running out, we planted some large boxwood shrubs in front of an old retaining wall (or possibly the remnants of an old foundation?) that we topped with large rocks to somewhat improve the view (it’s a work-in-progress). I wish we they were a smidge closer to the rock wall, but concrete in the soil made that impossible.

Beyond the boxwoods, you can see that we made some progress on the area next to the garage, too. I still have about half of the fenced-in area to weed, laying landscaping fabric as I go. We’re hoping to have our driveway paved this fall, so we’ll move the pea stone from our driveway to the fenced-in area, which will become our fire pit area next year. It looks crazy right now, I know, but I have faith that it will all come together!
