UPCYCLING: How to make a faux vintage tin

I think this might be one of my favorite projects I’ve ever made. Well, I say that about a lot of my projects. But this one was so fun to transform. Would you believe this faux vintage tin started out as a yellow plastic corn starch container?

I’ve always loved the shape of the Kingsford Corn Starch tub. The square shape is ideal for upcycling it into something else but that bright yellow plastic is hard to get past. Here’s how I transformed it into a faux vintage tin.

Wash your plastic container and dry thoroughly. Give it a few coats of silver metallic spray paint. I used Krylon Hammered Metal in Silver but it doesn’t have to be hammered metal. Once the tub is completely covered in spray paint and dry, give it an aged look with some craft paint. I dry brushed on a mixture of silver, black and dark brown.

There’s a variety of vintage labels available to download. My favorite source is the Graphics Fairy where I found this darling vintage glue label with bulldogs. Use a little distress ink or watered down craft paint to give your labels an aged look. Use glue or decoupage to adhere your labels to the tin.

And there you have it. A completely transformed plastic bin to a cute vintage tin that you could use for pencils, pens, paint brushes or a variety of other things.

Once your done organized, break out your paints and get creative.

I can’t wait to make more of these. I don’t use that much cornstarch but I’ll be saving other kitchen throw away containers to make a fun mismatched set of these faux tins.
