DIY closet "hideout"

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Hannah’s hideout is done, so I wanted to share it here. This little space is pretty tricky to photograph, but I think you’ll get the idea :)
The last time you saw this space, I’d removed the upper shelf and that was about it (it would probably look nicer without the shelf supports, but I left them in place in case we decide to reinstall the shelf some day). Hannah asked for purple walls in here, but I still had paint leftover from her bedroom walls, so we stuck with the pink, even on the ceiling.
The carpet tiles are from FLOR. They’re a little pricey given the exchange rate, but they look and feel great, and they were super easy to install. Hannah’s favourite colours are pink, purple and yellow right now, so she likes the colour and the fun animal pattern.
The baskets are from JYSK and help corral toys; the handles make it easy to pull them in and out and move them around.
I added this cute knob rack for Hannah’s dress-up clothes, which have been getting a lot more use now that they’re on display.

I’m pretty proud of the ladder, which I made using inexpensive 2x4s and extra long wood screws. It’s not perfect, but it’s sturdy. I secured it to the shelves with L-brackets, so it’s not going anywhere and it doesn’t take up (limited) floor space like an angled ladder would.

The colours in here all come from the curtain fabric. I found the mustard pillow at JYSK, and I sewed the other two pillow cases – one with leftover curtain fabric, and the other out of a cheapy pillow case.

For the bench cushion. I purchased a thick piece of foam and cut it to size, and sewed the cover and piping using fabric from Tonic Living. I purchased the fabric ages ago for another project that I never quite got around to, so I’m happy that I was able to use it here. Hannah has been begging to sleep up here, but we’ve told her that it’s only for reading books and hanging out.

This gives you a sense of what the hideout looks like from inside the room. I painted the door the same colour as the rest of the room so that it blends in with the walls as much as possible.

So that’s the finished ‘hideout’. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I think Hannah is too. While we were on vacation last week, she was chatting up one of the ladies who worked in our hotel and, after she left, Hannah turned to Adam and I and said, “I should have told her about my hideout!”
