$35 Guest Room Makeover
We have two extra bedrooms that we’ve termed “the blue room” and “the guest room”. The blue room is the larger room, but it has blue walls and wall-to-wall blue shag carpet, so converting it into a usable space will require a little more elbow grease and money.
With two different bathroom makeovers on the go right now, I really wanted this room to be more welcoming for our guests, but I didn’t have a lot of time or money to spend transforming it.
Luckily, I like the current wall colour – mint green – and the former owners kindly left some behind (clearly labelled, too). I really like the look of painting out the closet doors to match the walls (I did the same thing in Hannah’s room and the living room), so it was an easy choice to do it here. I updated the hardware with simple white ceramic knobs we already owned.
While Adam and Hannah were out of the house one Sunday, I built and stained a picture ledge, inspired by Chris Loves Julia. I used leftover wood and stain, so it was free and quick. The art is all stuff we already owned, and I like that the ledge makes it easy to switch things up without worrying about nail holes.
I got a great deal on a new light for the room from Wicker Emporium (it’s actually the only thing I purchased for the room), Hannah and I painted a worn side table with leftover furniture paint (an old hand-me-down from Adam’s parents), and I added a plant from our kitchen in need of a permanent home. Over the years, I’ve learned that plants are by far the easiest, cheapest way to breathe new life into a room.
On the opposite wall, I re-used the desk/vanity from our last home’s guest room and a mirror that used to hang in our old dining room. With the exception of the light, everything in the room is stuff we already owned.
Since I rely pretty heavily on picture inspiration to plan a room, I thought you might like to see what inspired the look of this room, and compare that to how it ultimately turned out.
