ESA satellite reveals Yellowstone’s deep secret
Satellite images acquired by ESA’s ERS-2 revealed the recently discovered changes in Yellowstone’s caldera are the result of molten rock movement 15 kilometres below the Earth’s surface, according to a recent study published in Nature.
Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry, InSAR for short, Charles Wicks, Wayne Thatcher and other U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists mapped the changes in the northern rim of the caldera, or crater, and discovered it had risen about 13 centimetres from 1997 to 2003.
InSAR, a sophisticated version of ‘spot the difference’, involves mathematically combining different radar images, acquired from as near as possible to the same point in space at different times, to create digital elevation models and reveal otherwise undetectable changes occurring between image acquisitions.
“We know now how mobile and restless the Yellowstone caldera actually is. Ground-based measurements can be more efficiently deployed because of our work,” Thatcher said. “The research could not have been done without satellite radar data.”

Lava glows red-orange hot, its also like 3000 degrees Farenheit. If everything was covered in grey ash, and you say, “Don’t walk on the grey ash-just below it could be lava”, so,then, where are you going to walk?
The data in the article seems to severely undermine the claims made in the headline. All of those small earthquakes in a short period of time suggests that whatever tectonic pressure that may have been building up, surely has been dissipating with all of these small movements. However the article also seems to blur the distinction between seismology, plate tectonics and volcanism. Seems that it would be somewhat normal and expected for a caldera to be associated with seismic activity…

Does anyone no where I can find some scientific data on how far the pyroclastic cloud not the ash itself will spread? I’ve seen unscientific literature anywhere from 250-500 miles. Wouldn’t all the mountains in the Rocky’s eventually stop it after 100 to 200 miles.

It`s funny how this site makes a big deal about 2.0 to 3.3 sized earthquakes. Go to Google Earth & have a look at Lake Taupo in New Zealand. You can`t miss it as it`s smack in the middle of the North Island & sits on the active central volcanic zone of Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro & Mt Tarawera. When it blew up it made Mt St Helens look small even though it wasn`t. The whole volcano simply disappeared. It was probably like Mt Taranaki a traditional cone to the west of Lake Taupo by the coast. Now it is a lake & last erupted about 230 AD.
Also Taupo was one of the biggest super volcanoes ever.
I assume there must be some revelant reason for posting old data about yellowstone? Although its not that old and there have been an unbelievable amount of earthquakes, volcanoes,and severe weather going on all over the planet lately. While haarp could eventually be dangerous in the wrong hands. It is not the reason for any of these recently compounding events. Super volcanoes have been a source of destruction in the past and most likely will be in the future.And Isis while we are on the subject of evil reptilians and also zetas that the governments of this world have made agreements with for technolgys and safety for themselves. My personal feeling is, by the time there was an actual emergency with the super volcano it would be way too late for anything but last good-bye. The USGS is not going to give a weeks notice even if they could because it would cause a mass panic. There would be no way to
get out of western states in time. The east of the Mississippi would fare
better and have less ash to worry about. Then there would be food and
water shortages in the states from Missouri west, so basically it’s going
to be like the “end times”.
