Mexico hit by 7.6-magnitude earthquake

HERE An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 has hit Mexico’s Guerrero region near Acapulco, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The quake hit around 12:02 p.m. local time, and was about 186 kilometres from the resort town of Acapulco, the agency said. The epicenter was 17.5 kilometres underground.

The quake swayed buildings in Mexico City, and sent frightened workers and residents into the streets. The mayor Marcelo Ebrard posted on Twitter that the water system and other “strategic services” were not experiencing problems.

But telephone service was down in Mexico City and in areas where the quake was felt.
