La. Sinkhole Drops Cavern 150 More Feet

Louisiana’s out-of-control monster 22-acre sinkhole dropped a faulty cavern’s floor another 150 feet inside the collapsing Napoleonville Salt Dome, according to parish officials Tuesday.

At 11:25 A.M. Tuesday, Assumption Parish officials reported, “Texas Brine has reported that the floor of Oxy 3 Cavern has gone down another 150′ to 4,088′.”

This drop, like the last major drop when the same cavern went down another 31 feet, followed a recent period of both increased seismic activity and carcinogenic hydrocarbons spewing from the belly of the beast Friday.

Chemicals are spreading miles into the once pristine swampland and bayous — and into the nearby communities.

That pattern at the disaster site has been established. Each time micro-quake activity increases, the monster “burps,” gulps down more of the surrounding environment and spews more hydrocarbons into the swamps, bayous and residents’ yards.

Meanwhile, Governor Jindal continues Big Energy business as usual. He continues to issue permits for more extraction and storage in the collapsing Napoleonville Salt Dome.

The “sinkhole,” actually a collapsing 1-mile by 3-mile salt dome, was 400 feet in diamter almost one year ago when Governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency and a mandatory evacuation for some 150 homes.

Threats of chemical poisoning and explosions have loomed since then.

Last reported, the “sinkhole” was 22 acres large, growing closer to the two bayous and respective communities on either side of it, Grand Bayou and Bayou Corne.

It is also growing closer to the only highway connecting east to west in that south Louisiana area, Hwy. 70. The state has been planning a new major highway development, in hopes of having it built before what appears to be the inevitable happens.

The area, a treasured Cajun paradise for generations, is now a national sacrifice zone.

It has been drilled, pumped and extracted for oil, gas and storage for the fossil fuel industry. Thousands of earthquakes, micro-quakes, began occurring, along with gas bubbles percolating in May 2012.

The rumbles abruptly stopped briefly on August 2, the day before the large “sinkhole” slurry area was discovered. Since then, increased siesmic activity has become a sign of the disaster area growing.

Some 44 residents have recently succumbed to being bought out for a song by the company the state holds responsible for the disaster due to its faulty cavern Oxy 3 in the salt dome, Houston-based Texas Brine LLC.

“We will keep everyone posted as information becomes available,” parish officials said Tuesday.
