Supervolcanoes like Yellowstone can explode without an earthquake or other external trigger, experts have found.
The sheer volume of liquid magma is enough to cause a catastrophic super-eruption, according to an experiment at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.
Simulating the intense heat and pressure inside these “sleeping giants” could help predict a future disaster.

If Yellowstone goes it will be game over for humanity. So much dust will be in the air it will drop global temperatures for a decade at least. Given how urbanized the world is now, how many people depend on crops from the US, and how few people can actually survive as hunter gatherers (vastly fewer than people think), most of humanity will die off. It will be rather like that incident 75,000 years ago that was believed to have nearly exterminated humanity, save for a small number along a few coastlines.
Even the elite who may have their bunkers won’t last it. Not only will their supplies run out but they’ll probably kill each other off via their schemes for power in the bunkers. Certainly when they came out they wouldn’t be willing to do the work needed to rebuild.
