27 Earthquakes at El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) During August 2014

The month of August, 2014 saw 27earthquakes at El Hierro in the Canary Islands; recorded at 27.1 N / 18.5 W – 28.1 N / 17.5 W. This number of earthquakes is down 17 from July of this year. The total is down 123 however; when compared to August of 2013; which had 150 earthquakes. August had just one earthquake more than the lowest month on record so far in 2014; which is January, at 26 earthquakes in the area.

According to the Instituto Geographico Nacional there have only been 114 events since April 6, 2014 in the El Hierro area.

The August activity brought the year’s total to 636. Although the activity has slowed down since the end of March 2014; the area is still active and will be monitored closely.

There has been no noticable volcanic activity in the desde Las Puntas area of late. Today’s webcam shot is below.
