RED ALERT: Rare Megaquake Advisory Issued… Spread This ASAP If You Have Family Here

For decades people in California have been waiting for “the big one,” the next major earthquake that, according to some predictions, could level major cities, kill thousands of people and cause billions of dollars worth of damage.

After an earthquake swarm occurred this past week, the United States Geological Services had issued an earthquake advisory of Southern California.

Now before you start heading for your bunker, understand that there is still a minimal chance of an earthquake happening. The USGS put the odds of a major earthquake at roughly 1 in 100, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The advisory only extends until Oct. 4, at which point the odds of a major earthquake will revert to their usual 1 in 6,000. The reason scientists issued the advisory was that earthquake swarms can put stress on fault lines, which in turn can cause more significant seismic activity.

“When there’s significant seismicity in this area of the fault, we kind of wonder if it is somehow going to go active,” seismologist Egill Hauksson explained. “So maybe one of those small earthquakes that’s happening in the neighborhood of the fault is going to trigger it, and set off the big event.”

Earthquakes remain one of the few natural disasters that scientists can almost never predict. Quakes can happen with very little warning and, as a result, can kill thousands of people very quickly.

If you live in California, it is a good idea to have an emergency kit with supplies that could last a few days, just in case the worst should happen — whether that’s between now and Oct. 4, or some other time.

Being over-prepared for a natural disaster is never a bad thing.
