Eruption video: Mount Etna spews lava & ash, lights up night sky

Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, erupted on Saturday. The eruption shot up a towering column of ash and fire to light up the night sky over much of eastern Sicily. Several inhabited villages dot the mountain’s slopes. The latest lava flow didn’t endanger any houses, and no evacuation was ordered. Etna erupts occasionally, its last major eruption occurred in 1992.

MOUNT Etna has erupted sparking fear across Sicily as Europe’s biggest and most powerful volcano sends an ash cloud across the holiday isle in Italy.

Italy’s Mount Etna has started spewing lava in what is its second eruption of the year.

Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina.

The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: “You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast.”

An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation.
