No Magic to Slavery

How people associate slavery with the South of the U.S.A. during the pre-Civil War period is a great injustice to the South because slavery is not new, nor was it invented by those Southerners.

Slavery began long before America was settled, and its principles lie deeply rooted in the period of organized religion and mankind as far back as Egypt when the first tribe conquered another and wondered what to do with them.

Putting them to work seemed a natural option to increase the profits of the controllers.

Slaveowners and slaveholders are not so different in fashion as they are in form from a legal perspective. One need not wield the whip in order to subdue expendable persons.

Mutuality is not a part of the slavery experience; never is, and never has been.

Slavery is the use of other persons for private benefit regardless of whether the slave also manages to gain some benefit by the experience. Inequality is built into the formula as one is meant to provide a benefit for the other.

Violence need not be an element of the offense; exploitation is.

Whether it is derived from distorted labor wages, and coerced labor conditions, or pure slavery, the potential for slavery exists in all financial arrangements – collective or individual – the degree of mutuality controling whether or not sufficient benefit resides on both sides of the equation.

Slavery is a relationship, not an act. It may exist within the remoteness of a contract, or within the intimacy of a marriage, or a parent/child relationship. The only controling feature of slavery is lack of mutuality, lack of mutual benefit to a degree sufficient that coercion exists.

Volition cannot exist in slavery, and implied consent is slavery’s best friend since it is self justifying.

The Civil war had to occur to prevent the indiscriminate lynching of persons for whom slavery was a daily reckoning, but that reckoning occurs daily today in numerous government and business created relationships that are inescapable, but overlooked as not contributing to the attitudes of slavery.

Profits have never required slavery to exist, but are made fruitful and lucrative through slavery. Humans, therefore, have a proclivity to embrace slavery as a form of human transaction by which benefits accrue from one to another in business just as in other human relations.

There is no magic to slavery. It is the abilty of one person or group to coerce another to provide more benefits for the one than the other. Hence, it is considered evil, the epitome of evil by freedom loving persons, justifiably so, and democracies arise to prevent the coercion that slavery engenders.
