Capitol Update: Democrats Want MORE Money From Taxpayers Before Re-Opening Govt.
Following a skewed NBC/WSJ poll late last week showing the public was blaming Republicans for the government shutdown more than Democrats, the Senate Democrats decided they no longer just wanted a “clean” continuing resolution to end the partial government shutdown – now they want MORE government spending. Here’s a break-down of what brought them to that point from sources inside the Capitol:

Early last week, Democrats were growing increasingly wobbly over the ongoing impasse with their Republican counterparts. Polling then indicated Barack Obama’s approval rating had plummeted. The White House in turn issued statements indicating a new found openness to considering a temporary agreement to open and fund the federal government. Some in the media, including this blog, deemed that a clear sign Barack Obama was caving to the mounting political pressure against his administration.
A couple days later, and another poll of (mostly) Democrats, resulted in the predictable result of showing more people blamed Republicans for the partial government shutdown. This apparently emboldened Senate Democrats (Harry Reid) who rebuked any idea of a shorter term agreement. Then over the weekend, Reid and his fellow Senate Democrats began indicating they not only wanted to see government re-opened, and the debt ceiling resolved, but they are now demanding MORE deficit spending. Since 2011, the budget has been moderately trimmed following the sequestration agreement signed onto by both parties at that time.
