Bannon out, Neocons in, Bushite Elliot Abrams pitches himself to Trump (again) in Politico

“Step one, says Elliott Abrams: Get rid of Steve Bannon.

“He’s not a good influence on the president,” Abrams, no man to mince words, tells me. Having the White House’s chief political strategist on the National Security Council “was a terrible mistake,” and booting him was a good start to what needs to happen. A giant smile spreads across his face at the thought of Bannon being forced out of the White House completely.“

The neoconservatives are on the march as of late.  In today’s’ Politico Elliot Abrams, Trump critic turned Trump White House wantabe explains why it is that Steve Bannon is a bad guy and why he, Abrams, and why his big government, empire building, missile launching, new world order philosophy should be embraced by Mr. Trump. Abrams appears very encouraged by Mr. Trump’s bombing of Assad. From the sounds of the attached Politico piece he sounds practically giddy.

When I heard that Steve Bannon had been pushed out of the National Security Council this thought came into my mind, “Bannon out. Neocons in.” Sure enough, within 24 hours Tomahawk missiles were streaking across the Syrian desert.

Suddenly the Russia collusion talk went away for the most part. Suddenly Senators McCain and Graham were cheering. The establishment, the neoconservatives who wanted Hillary to wage war in the Middle East and to confront Russia got what they wanted. The “deep state” smiled and continues to smile. It thinks it has Trump where it wants him.

And indeed it may.

Why the chemical attack in Syria happened is not for us to say. Why would Assad do this at this point, knowing that such an attack was about the only thing that would bring the wrath of the United States? Why would he snatch defeat from the the jaws of victory? It seems odd and we’ll likely never know what really happened. For sure anyway.

Regardless, in the wake of the recent developments the USA is again flexing its muscles for reasons outside of its vital interests.

Syria is not of vital interest to the United States. It just isn’t

It is for the Saudis. It is for Israel. It is for the Iranians. It is for the Turks. It is for the Russians. But us? Not really – except to the extent that it impacts the lasting footprints of our earlier misadventures in the neighborhood. Misadventures of which Mr. Abrams was a key part. 

Did Steve Bannon make the point that Syria, despite what many in Washington will argue, is not of vital interest to the US and could unessisarily provoke a war that could draw in a nuclear Russia? We have no idea. But anyone who had would have felt extreme pressure from the powers who now cheer on war. Abrams’s friends.

No one likes a turd in the war punchbowl and the neocons love a war party. (It’s not the neocon’s kids fighting in the desert for the most part after all.)
