O.K., so United Airlines dragged a poor guy out of his seat, broke his nose and knocked out a couple of his teeth.

Hey, he had it coming to him because he wouldn’t submit to their Gestapo orders and give up the seat he had reserved and paid for.

Right?

When you buy an airline ticket, you are subject to a monstrous contract, written in tiny print. It was created by airline lawyers, and agreed to by Congress. It is completely one-sided, and it says in essence: “You have no rights, so shut up and do as you’re told.  Or else.”

You may think you’re a customer, but you’re just a money source, and the less they have to do for you, the better.

Want food? Are you kidding?

Have luggage? Pay up, big time. Want your luggage back when you land?  Ha. You’ll wait and wait, and if you’re lucky your bags will show up, and if you’re really lucky, your bags won’t be damaged or wet from being out in the rain.

Oh, if we do damage something, read our contract.

Need a bathroom. Well, we have three teeny, dirty ones to accommodate a couple hundred people, but only when the pilot turns off the seat belt sign. And don’t wait near the door, and stay out of the aisle. We’re serving overpriced drinks for more profit.

Legs hurt from being cramped in a triple-seat row with no leg room? That’s your problem. Don’t complain to us just because we make you arrive at the airport 1.5 hours early so you can stand in too-few, too-long security lines, while you pray you won’t get bumped or your crotch grabbed by security.

Oh, you say the foreign airlines treat you much better? Say another word and we’ll call security and have them toss you out of the country.

Anyway, you may not believe this, but I went to the theater the other day. I bought a ticket for a specific seat. Every seat had been sold, but the theater did not overbook. I was not asked to give up my seat, nor was anyone else.

The theater didn’t sell two tickets for the same seat.

There were a few no-shows, but the theater didn’t mind. Those no-shows simply lost the money they paid for their seats. But no one was kicked out. The theater didn’t lose anything.

If that sounds normal, you don’t understand the airline business. Those airline folks want no-shows so they can sell the same seat twice.

Ever notice all those standby people waiting near the counter? They are waiting for no-shows so the airline can sell them the seat someone else has paid for.

Two fairs for one seat.  Can’t beat that business plan.

The airlines love to pretend they need to overbook to make up for no-shows, but that is a bunch of malarky.  So long as you, the flying public, believe there is a good reason to put up with the cattle treatment, the airlines will keep overbooking.

You’re being taken for a ride. Enjoy your ride, sucker.
