Mark Zuckerberg joins Silicon Valley bigwigs in calling for government to give everybody free money

Now, will Facebook be providing this money? Or will the middle class largely? You know on top of all the other programs it already pays for?

The one argument associated with a “universal basic income” which is even slightly compelling is that with a universal basic income one could then withdraw all welfare and just have people pay for the services they need with the explicitly “free” money. But we all know that won’t happen.

Taxes will go up. More income will be taken from those who work for it. Other people, because it will be rational to do so, will simply opt out of work.

On the other hand, from Zuckerberg’s perspective people will have more time to mess around on Facebook. (Just wait until they get the virtual reality kinks worked out.) 

Why do some people want government everywhere and involved in everything? Government should be basically invisible to the absolute degree possible. Government is not US. It’s not the citizenry. It has its own interests and getting EVERYONE on the dole would be very useful for the government.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg called on the need to consider universal basic income for Americans during his Harvard Commencement Speech.

Zuckerberg’s comments reflect those of other Silicon Valley bigwigs, including Sam Altman, the president of venture capital firm Y Combinator.

“Every generation expands its definition of equality. Now it’s time for our generation to define a new social contract,” Zuckerberg said during his speech. “We should have a society that measures progress not by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful. We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure everyone has a cushion to try new ideas.”
