Fear of Violent Protests Raises Cost of Free Speech on Campus (Totalitarians try to make speech too expensive)

This is one way people are trying to shut down speech. It’s just sad. Tribal warfare instead of civil discourse. The alt-Right guys and the alt-Left guys are screwing up everything for everyone else. And they know what their doing.

So what is being said here (by some) is that anti-speech people (And to be clear we support the right to free speech for EVERYONE and abhor bigotry – I guess we have to say that now. Another sad development) can just veto speech by making enough trouble around a speaker. If it costs too much then the speaker doesn’t speak. Basically thug politics.

“This is not sustainable, this is absolutely not sustainable,” said University of Florida’s Ms. Sikes. “Public institutions cannot continue to pay this kind of money.”

Experts say the recent wave of speakers—beginning with an appearance in February at Berkeley of the former Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos that prompted a riot—has changed the dynamic of such campus events.

“What happened at Berkeley was really a watershed moment,” said Sue Riseling, executive director of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. “There has been a paradigm shift.”

Really? There’s been a “paradigm shift”? For WHOM? Toward the restriction of free speech and toward the violation of Constitutional rights? Is that how things have “shifted”?

Perhaps for the totalitarians things have shifted, but they sure haven’t for those of us who believe in the sanctity of speech.

There are always going to be nuts. There are always going to be bigots. This is unfortunate but true. There will also always be people who will seek to restrict free speech. Sometimes it comes from the social conservatives. Sometimes it comes from the alt-left totalitarians. But both groups are wrong.

Something needs to be figured out but the Political Correctness Brigades don’t get the final say on this. Sorry dudes.
