Firm behind Fearless Girl statue to pay $5 million settlement for underpaying female execs

The agreement calls on State Street to pay $5 million into a fund for 305 female executives and 15 black executives, which the investigation also found had been paid less than similarly situated white employees in the same positions.

Artist Kristen Visbal’s Fearless Girl statue of a girl with her hands on her hips was commissioned by State Street Global Advisors, a division of State Street Corp., and placed on a traffic island facing Wall Street’s Charging Bull statue on March 7.

The work was embraced by tourists and others as a symbol of female empowerment, though some critics have questioned the motives of State Street, which has said the statue was intended “to celebrate the power of women in leadership and to urge greater gender diversity on corporate boards.”

The Italian artist who installed Charging Bull in 1987 has called for the girl statue to be removed because he says it distorts his work unfairly, making the bull seem like a symbol of anger or sexism, rather than prosperity.

The “Charging Bull” artist paid for the sculpture himself, was an immigrant, and intended the sculpture to represent his bullishness on America in the wake of the 1987 stock crash.

The “fearless girl” statue? Paid for by a Wall Street firm now fined for engaging in systematic sexism. But don’t forget to put your P hat on when you take a selfie with it when you go to New York for Christmas.
