Roger Goodell tells NFL owners ‘everyone should stand for the national anthem’

We probably need to be clear (again) on this issue. Our beef is not that some players don’t want to stand for the national anthem. If they wish to do this they aren’t offending us. We don’t watch the NFL anymore anyway. It is more that these players seem to be disrespecting the fans for whom standing for the anthem is important. It’s the arrogance that is irksome. The idea that if the fans don’t like it – they can stuff it. Even though it is the fans who pay the salaries of the players.

We’ve made the point that the best way for fans to express their displeasure is by simply walking away from the NFL. Turn it off. The league will get the message. And it looks like it has.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday wrote a letter to all 32 league owners regarding the protests that have taken place during the national anthem, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

In the letter, which Schefter shared on his Facebook page, Goodell wrote that the “current dispute over the National Anthem is threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country.”

That’s about right. But the NFL has more problems than just kneeling players. That brain injury is widespread in the NFL – as in almost everyone in the NFL – is an issue. Who would want their kid to bash up their computer for a couple of years in the National Football League? 96% percent of players have football induced brain injuries. Why not just encourage kids to sniff glue while we’re at it?

That the NFL is deeply crony is another issue.
